Default Quick question about PCM

I could probably experiment with this a figure it out myself, but figured some of you could shoot a quick answer out for me.

My BD player is set to PCM. Can I still use my receiver's settings like, "midnight", "DRC"? Or, are these disabled by using the PCM setting?

Thanks.

Typically, DRC is provided by data within an encoded DD or TrueHD bitstream. Only the decoder can apply the DRC. After it is converted to PCM, that option is over.

However, if you have a newer AVR with Dolby Volume or Audyssey Dynamic Volume, those can operate on PCM.

Yeah I kind of tested it last night and didn't notice that it was making a difference. Too bad I thought I might try it here and there, guess I'll have to switch back to Bitstream for that.

Your Panasonic BD55 also has DRC for Dolby sources. Simply apply it in the player.

Your receiver says the 920 can apply DRC when decoding both Dolby and DTS sources, although I'm not sure what it does with DTS since DTS does not have metadata for DRC. Perhaps it just uses a generic midnight mode.

Also, while DRC is limited to encoded audio sources, you can use Midnight mode on your 920 with PCM.

Thanks for the additional info. I knew the player had the option, but it's more difficult to apply since you have to exit your play mode and go into the functions menu.
Maybe I'll mess around with the midnight setting. Just trying to find away to balance out those titles that really have tough dialogue to hear but HUGE explosions. BUT, I don't want to use it all the time.
