Default Things mentioned in a movie that we never got to see.

Have you ever watched a film and a character mentions something that has happened but we never actually got to see it. Here are 2 examples,

The Wizard of Oz - Just before the wicked witch sends off her flying monkey army she says to the head monkey 'I sent a little insect on ahead to take the fight out of them'. This references the Jitterbug scene where the insect makes Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion do a Jitterbug swing dance which tires them out but was deleted by the film makers to cut the running time.

The Goonies - At the end of the film Data says that the Octopus was particularly scary even though we never saw it anywhere in the film. The scene was cut because it looked crap but it is in the deleted scenes of the dvd/blu ray.

Nice topic idea.

And I thought of one straight away, but while I was reading your post I forgot it!

It was something from a film that referenced a deleted scene, but damned if I can remember what it was now If I remember it I'll be straight back in here!

EDIT: In Pulp Fiction, as they arrive at Jack Rabbit Slims, Mia tells Vincent that an 'Elvis man should love this'. This is to do with a cut scene where she says that people can be sorted into Elvis fans or Beatles fan, and she bets he is an Elvis fan.

Off hand I can not think of specifics, but I have seen a few movies where scenes from the trailers were only to be found in the deleted scenes.

RE: the Goonies, I always thought they (the kids) just made that up to impress the papers or whatever, embellish the story a little.

Great thread topic. I had always wondered about the mention of the octopus in The Goonies when I watched the movie, but never thought much about it.

It seems fairly common to see scenes in previews of movies that get cut from the movie, but I can't think of a reference to a cut scene. In the preview for Major Payne there was a scene that showed him (Major Payne) holding a lighter up to a sprinkler head in the students' barracks to set off the sprinkler system and wake them up, but we never see it in the movie, and there's no reference to it. (Sprinkler systems don't work that way either by the way. )

Lord of the Rings - FOTR

When they fought the orcs outside Moria before running into Lorien.

It was definitely shot, but it didn't make it into the movie.

Is this thread only for scenes that were shot, delted, lost, etc, for can it extend to story elements that are mentioned but never shown?

Off the top of my head, I heard that a whole 20 minutes of the Battle of Geonosis was cut out of "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones." Supposedly, a bunch of Jedi were supposed to fight their way onto a fleeing battleship and find something inside that correlates to the other movies. I would love to see that!

I think the point of the thread is to discuss scenes that were filmed, cut, but are still somehow referenced or discussed at some other point in the movie. (Obviously my previous post deviated from this.) The octopus scene from The Goonies as posted by the OP is a perfect example. The scene was filmed and then cut from the final movie. However, reference was still made to it later when Data says how scary the octopus was.

I would guess that a scene that was never filmed for some reason, but portrays an event discussed at some point in the movie would still qualify.

You can include stuff that was in the trailer but never made the film. I remember watching the trailer for LOTR The Return of the King and there was a very brief scene of Merry kneeling before King Theoden to be made a rider of the mark that never made the film but is in the extended edition.

Right on, that makes sense.

Yes, that reminds me! In "Jurassic Park," the trailer shows a brief scene where the lady (forgot her name) grabs a giant leaf while they're driving. In the movie itself, this shot is cut, but they still show her looking over the leaf and remarking "this shouldn't be here..."

I think the second movie also showed a brief cut in the trailer of the T-Rex's giant foot sinking in the mud. I don't think it appears in the movie's theatrical cut though.

Quote from Rene Russo in Lethal Weapon 3: "Close is a lingerie shop without a front window."

Apparently this line was a reference to a scene that was planned but never actually scripted and filmed, so even the actors didn't even know what it meant.
