Microsoft has announced that as of November 1, 2010, the price for Xbox Live Gold will go up in Canada, the US, United Kingdom and Mexico. The annual fee will go up by $10 in the United States, with one and three month subscriptions also going up in price. Starting November 1, a one month subscription in the US will cost $9.99 and a three month subscription will carry a price tag of $24.99. These are increases of $2 and $5 respectively. In the UK, a one month subscription will go up by 1 GBP to 5.99. Canadian and Mexican one month subscriptions will go up by $1 CAD and 100 Pesos each to $9.99 and 599 Pesos. All other subscription packages will have the same prices. In a posting, Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb explained the hike: "Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same. We're confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry. However, we do want to thank our loyal members and give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount, so now would be a good time to renew your subscription." Analyst Jesse Divinich of EEDAR believes this price increase will not have a major effect of Microsoft's momentum or subscription base, saying that, "EEDAR believes the fee increase will do little to impact the positive momentum of the Xbox 360," and that given the service improvements through the year, "it comes as no surprise that Microsoft would eventually increase the price of a Gold subscription by a moderate amount." |

Canada, the US, United Kingdom and Mexico is across the globe? Also the Canadian price has already been those prices for the longest... Either way this is bad news, but there will always be deal to be had if you're willing to look. I never paid full price in the past and I won't in the future.

I never pay full price for LIVE gold, but where do you find Points Cards for less than they're asking price? I know Amazon was recently selling the 1600 points card for $16.XX, but other than that I haven't seen them any cheaper than their asking price.

Aye, typo on my part there. Only going up £1 which isn't too bad and as I say, our 12 month was already $60 as it was.

Not that I believe this will harm MS in the slightest, just seems odd to raise prices while the competition, Sony's PSN, offers free online gameplay and offers dedicated servers on many first party games..
Maybe there is a lot of appeal for all the non-gaming stuff to certain demographics?? |

They'd probably just adjust back to whatever the threshold is. I used to have live and now I just play on the PSN (IMO better) which is free, I'd pay for it but I'm glad I don't have to! Who knows, maybe the PSN will come with a free to play online in the future as well.

I could not care less about maintaining a gold membership. I don't play online. I only download updates & game content. So MS hasn't been, nor will they be getting any of my money for any Live services.
...And if they decide to charge for silver, they can kiss my @!%. Last edited by OG Pooh; 08-31-2010 at 03:44 AM. |

Obviously not in favor of this lol, but doesn't affect me any... less then a $1 more a month in no way breaks my bank. Also after not having a 360 for almost two years (just got one again a month or two ago) i can say i am majorly impressed with the new features, layouts, etc... there have been some major improvements since the XBOXlive i remember.
THAT BEING SAID, game companies are getting way too greedy on ALL the consoles, they see DLC and online as nothing more then a cash cow when it really should be a way to give back to the community that fills its wallets. To further enhance games and fix issues as they crop up, instead in to many cases we see content that would have been included withheld for a price tag a month after release. This is not a trend i am happy with at all. |
