Default Will 3D Blu-ray replace standard 2D Blu-ray?

Is it going to get to a point where blu ray 2d phases out and gets replaced by 2d. Will i have to buy a new tv and blu ray player or is it simply an alternative?

No it won't replace Blu-ray, no worries.

Just think of it as a bonus for those who wants 3D and you'd still be able to watch "2D" blu-rays on 3D tv's anyways.

No, I do not think it will be a viable choice considering the additional expenses (IE: 3D Player, 3D TV, glasses, etc). I think it will be a novelty then die out faster than Laser Disc. JMO

Will it get to a point where they will only release one version of the disk that has both the 3d and 2d cuts of the movie?

I see it more as a deluxe add-on for those who enjoy 3D movies then anything else. It will be expensives for at lest another few years and will probaly not be accepted right away by a large portion of the customers

I also believe that unless it is a projector, it will be a complete waste of money. Of course unless you have a 55" and sit 5 feet from it.

All this recent talk of 3D seems kinda crazy to me. I liked Avatar as much as anyone, but I don't think 2D is going to go away for a long time.

BTW I don't intend that comment as a dig at the OP - everyone is talking 3D, he or she is just responding to that...

no offense taken, im just worried about the longevity of this format. since august i have accumulated over 70 blu ray movies and realy do not want to have to replace them with 3d blu ray movies. Its unfortunate that these companies feel like they need to upgrade their movies again.

The thing is that it's being coming and going for more then 50 years and everytime we hear "it's here to stay" only it does not. I know that once again everyone is saying, it's different now but it's hard to think it won't just go away again after failling to gain ground.

Not for me! Every time I see a 3D movie it is great for the first 3 - 5 min then I start getting a headache and start noticing how blurry the picture is. I will wait until 3D BD is mainstream, and I mean much more mainstream than BD is by itself right now before I check it out. I just do not see it getting much better anytime soon. Also if I have to wear the glasses then no sale no matter how good it gets.

AT the last Tech Expo in Las Vegas they had a 3D TV on display with no glasses needed. That being said it's not expected to be available on the market for 5 or more years.

No glasses is a step in the right direction at least, but I will still need to see the results.

The guy who reported on it (was here in Montreal TV show) saw it live at the Expo. He admit not being a huge fan of 3D but he was impress it seem by the TV, He's a big gamer and he could probably see lots of ways to use it for games if there is no need for glasses. Like you and many people he just cannot wear those glasses all the time

No, I don't think 3D will replace 2D anytime soon if ever. 3D will be an alternative and will peacefully coexist with 2D. Many people such as myself recently have shelved out money to purchase a full 1080P LCD and it is not justifiable in my bank account to spent another 3 grand on another LCD just for 3D technology.

To have 3D capabilities, you will need 1.4 HDMI, 3D LCD, 3D player and movie that is in 3D. The most expensive being the LCD upgrade.

However if some companies are willing to let us trade in our 2D set to upgrade to 3D and pay the difference then I might think about it. Until then I am perfectly satisfied with my 2D.

I think it will too. I just dont see it doing well. I personally don't even like 3D.

I think we all know a few people who haven't even made the jump to blu ray yet... why would companies come out with yet another format so quickly? I know I'm not making the jump unless my TV craps the bed and I get a sweet deal on a 3D one. Im also not a fan of having to wear glasses over my glasses.

It's just the money. Manufacturers are jumping into the market with less expensive electronics, so Blu player and LCD televisions don't have profit margins the larger manufacturers want.

Despite all the hoopla over box office numbers, people are staying home in droves - theater business isn't what it used to be. So the triple whammy is in with 3-D:

- Get them in the theaters with a 3-D spectacular
- Motivate them to reboot their televisions and players, even if they're less than a year old (over 4.5 million Blu players were sold within the last five months)
- Get people to buy 3-D movies, creating more "first day buy for me" and "can't wait" chants, and more traffic for the expensive 3-D productions

Production of 3-D films is very expensive, according to just about everyone in the industry. We'll see how long it can be sustained, with theaters having to rebuild their projection and screen systems, and users have to buy all new televisions, goggles, and players.

So it's not just a simple firmware upgrade? I was at the Panasonic Pavilion in Vancouver that is set up for the Olympics and they were demoing 3D there.
It sounds like HD-DVD/Blu-Ray all over again where everyone rushes to get their product out the door before a standard is established only to have everyone who jumped on board realize they're on a sinking ship.

Thumbs up

Dont worry there will be two alternatives, they will make 3D Blu Rays, but they will still make 2D Blu Rays at the same time.
