Default Blu-ray Player Sales to Top 32M Units in 2011

2011 The Year of Blu . From Home Media Magazine:

Quote:
With Blu-ray Disc and player sales coming off a record year, 2011 is expected to see more of the same, with unit sales topping 32 million units, an analyst said.

Ralph Schackart with William Blair & Co. in Chicago, Jan. 12 made the projection following discussions Jan. 7 at CES with executives from audio technology provider DTS Inc.

DTS supplies high-def audio functionality to major studio Blu-ray releases, including recent titles Resident Evil: Afterlife; The Other Guys; Salt; Twilight: Eclipse; Eat Pray Love; and The Bridge Over the River Kwai, among others. Indeed, DTS audio is included in 85% of the top 100 Blu-ray movies sold, according to the company.

Schackart said DTS management believes connected Blu-ray player sales could reach 35 million units this year, citing consumer demand for high-end audio solutions, continued drop of Blu-ray player prices and the need for multichannel DTS audio solutions for streaming content as drivers.

“We couldn’t be any happier with Blu-ray right now,” DTS CEO Jon Kirchner and CFO Mel Flanigan told Schackart, according to a research note.

Is this Worldwide or just America?

So when are digitial downloads scheduled to obliterate Blu-ray to its death again?

US, it was 27.5M for 2010, but now that I see those numbers together 32M looks low

Place a check in the column for me in the doomed category...
32M hopefully will translate to titles I want to own at my price!

Blu-Ray is doomed.

I predict its utter death in about 2021.

Does this mean 4.5 million players more than 2010?? That is low, scary low.

not sure, but I agree that it does not make sense. Either HMM got something wrong or that guy did, or we are missing something.

The title and the early part of the article says 32 million when the guy himself says 35. Typo?

That'd be a difference of 7.5 million rather than 4.5.

And it's hard to say how the PS3 factors in to these numbers.

One thing I've discovered recently is that there's a lot wrong with HMM's numbers. When I tracked their 2010 physical media sales numbers, I used their up/down from 2009 percentages to "back into" the 2009 numbers. But when I went back to check the actual 2009 numbers, they matched my numbers in some weeks, but not in others. And frequently the DVD number was wrong, but the BD number was right.

And then I checked the 1st week of 2011 vs the 1st week of 2010 using their numbers and again they were wrong. There's someone at HMM who can't do math (or has a bad spreadsheet).

Example:
For 1/11/09, they reported $110.78m for DVD and $18.71m for BD.
For 1/10/10, they reported $141.48m for DVD and $22.42m for BD
For 1/08/11, they reported $120.91m for DVD and $29.4m for BD.

But they claim that 1/8/2011 was down 19.5% for DVD and up 18.6% for BD. That should have made 1/10/10 $150.2m for DVD and $24.789m for BD.

Likewise, they claimed 1/10/10 was down 5.4% for DVD and up 19.85% for BD. That should have made 1/11/09 $149.56m for DVD and $18.71m for BD.

Notice that the BD figure for 2009 is correct. That happens some weeks. And then every once in a while, they got it all right for a few weeks. It may be think that possibly it's right when the regular person is on vacation.

lol I have seen to many people that can't do 1+1 properly, so bad math is possible.

I don't know how you know which weeks are right and which are wrong, (what do you compare them to?), but don't forget that they use the first alert numbers and then augment for the rest of the market. So being off is a given, these are just fun and close enough to reality to have an idea of what is going on. That is why it bugs me when people take them as gopel (or worst, the "how can it be only x% for the week" crap or " it only grew by Y%" or "it shrunk, BD is doomed" (wait for Avatare week, you will see what I mean).

The DEG 2010 report stated that the 28.5 million BD player figure was for all BD players sold through 2010 since the format was launched (US alone). There were 11.25 million BD players sold in 2010 (37% of all disc players). If 32.5 million BD players are sold in 2011 (I am assuming that is a worldwide figure), that would be an awesome result.
