As this is a Universal/Studio Canal release, is it likely that the French subtitles will be optional or forced when playing the English soundtrack?

I don't believe they will be, considering that a subdivision of Studio Canal: Canal+ Droits Audiovisuels, is a production company on the film.

Highly unlikely especially @ €9,99. The only Blu-ray you'll get in France for that will have fireplaces or fish tanks on it.

This error (so far!) is being repeated in quite a few places and now seems "official" thanks to Google.

The most accurate place would be StudioCanal themselves and http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/f49323-ice-storm.html (I don't think I've found an error there in almost 10 years) and of course that image on Amazon is for a DVD. You don't find many listings' errors in France (they do like their écritures ) but we have one here folks.

If I'm wrong I'll eat my wonderful Criterion The Ice Storm DVD and put it on YouTube

It is not one error - there are over 15. I checked two weeks ago with a PR person and all of these 9.99 Euro Canal titles are DVD only. Unfortunately, you will have to wait until the discs enter Amazon's warehouse for the system listings to be updated.

That's a pity. Oh well, maybe Criterion will release it on Blu in the US, as they did on DVD.
