Default PS3 got much quieter

I have the 60gb fatty PS3 and it is known for the loud fan while playing movies.

I just replaced my old surge protector with a panamax power conditioner and notice when watching movies the PS3 sounds stealth. Anyone else notice that when going with a power conditioner?

i should try that, my PS3 would get super loud when playing a Blu-ray movie or game, so i moved it to a different location and made stilts so its lifted from the ground and that helped greatly. cause if you have every felt the bottom of your system, that gets super hot along with the rest of it. the key is good ventilation. but its not stealth quiet like your describing
P.S. I'm using the same 60GB fatty

I have the old 60GB model too. I've never heard the fans on it. I have good hearing and all but it's outside the theater.

I know someone who has one of the Metal Gear Solid special edition PS3's and doesn't use it because of the noise. He showed me and when it kicks onto the high fan it's easily hear-able.

He has it inside a traditional entertainment center type semi-closed up space though which is why it kicks into high in the first place.

it worked for me, at least so far.
before that I even layed my PS3 on cold tile floor, up-right postion and down also ran a external USB PC fan to help blow out the fan from the exhaust and no luck. Now its in a cuddy on the cabinet and no noise or no where near as much as it was.

Ventilation is the key for keeping the fat boy from heating up...I have mine in the open, just resting on a small table by the TV, the fan would only kick on at full speed when the place is hot..

I know that. Notice the pic that I just posted and how it is now? Well that is now and no noise since the power conditioner installed.

I must not be seeing that picture right.

It looks like the right side of the PS3 is against a shelf.

My PS3 would never survive that for very long.

I have a very open wire rack type of thing (not the one in my Gallery, I have to update that) and nothing anywhere near the PS3 for the most part. Heat pours out that right side.

The picture looks like approx instant PS3 death to me.

I don't know if this picture will post correctly...

My gear rack is not that one but basically the same type of thing. Wire shelving with open front, back, and sides and nothing close by.

I used to have a more traditional rack that you can still see in my "gallery" and I took off the front and back hoping then that the PS3 had enough ventilation.

My launch day 60GB did the YLOD thingie almost 3 years exactly after I bought it but lucky for me I had the 3 year warranty which I paid a few dollars extra for. So Sony exchanged it for me no charge.

Thinking it died from heat I switched to a system that gave it all the ventilation it could want.

The pic you have with the vent on the side a millimeter or two from a shelf wall is something which I think will kill the PS3 in no time no matter how you "condition" the power.

I agree. 4 years ago my 360 died on account of overheating. Since then, I have been much more cautious of overheating. I would never put my PS3 in that tight space, at least not lying flat.

OP, can you turn it vertical in that same cubby-hole? I would think that would give it more room to breathe.

Especially since a large vent is on the right side of the PS3. The current position would severely limit the air flow.

On the left side of the PS3 (if you want to position the PS3 standing up-right) there are no vents on that side. Hope you do understand about that.

Sitting like your PS3 is sitting... You should have lots of heat coming out the right side.

The right side is a vent.

Your PS3 may be getting ready to be very quiet as in dead.

I have little over 1" on that side for ventilation

I also clean out my PS3 regularly, using a low level hose with suction to get the vents clear - seems to help

Not sure what you're trying to say here. Yes, I'm aware you can stand up the PS3 and the base of the PS3, when vertical, would be the left hand side. The right hand side has a large vent which appears to be obstructed in your picture.

Just a thought - when using older standalone computers the fans were noisy keeping the system cool - when the fans went silent it was time to replace them. As i don't have the PS3 it could just be quiet - but my experience with electronic equipment tell me that you should have a quick look to see that it is working.

I've noticed the fan kick on sooner in a movie when it's upconverting standard def DVDs vs. blu-ray.

Not an issue anymore since mine died of YLOD after not quite 3 years. No ext. warranty. Reflow of CPU/GPU and replacement of thermal paste of no help.

Well, there is one issue: replacement.
