This is one of those films that I enjoyed at the theater, but wouldn’t necessarily buy on Blu-ray for multiple revisits. Definitely worth seeing if you haven’t, though.
Here’s my movie content review... Zak, a 22 year-old man played by Zack Gottsagen, has been consigned to a nursing home in rural North Carolina because he has Down's Syndrome and no family or external resources to provide care for him. Due to his repeated attempts to escape the facility, often with the encouragement of his elderly roommate, played by Bruce Dern, he has been labeled as a flight risk by his volunteer caregiver, Eleanor, played by Dakota Johnson. One night, Zak successfully sneaks out through the window and flees into the darkness, clothed only in his underwear, in hopes of traveling to Georgia in order to train at a professional wrestling school run by his idol, the “Salt Water Redneck”, played by Thomas Haden Church, whose videos he has watched constantly in his room. When he crosses paths with Tyler, a scruffy down-and-out crab fisherman played by Shia LaBeouf, the two of them set out on an unforgettable river raft adventure along the coastline. The 2019 drama, The Peanut Butter Falcon, which was written and directed by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, will inevitably draw comparisons to similar buddy films, namely Rain Man, but its heart belongs in the world of Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, with a touch of the 2000 Coen Brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, thrown into the recipe. The Savannah, Georgia film locations have an enchanting charm to them that sets the tone for what could have been a cloyingly quirky outing in lesser hands, as does the Americana music that graces the proceedings. This film is not without its contrivances, but our three main lead characters are developed so adeptly that one cannot help but be immersed in their respective struggles and sympathetic backstories. I believe that this is LaBeouf's finest acting to date, and he exudes the perfect blend of outlaw ruggedness and unlikely camaraderie. Johnson, who impressed me greatly with her work in the 2018 releases, Suspiria and Bad Times at the El Royale, is at her most effortlessly down-to-Earth here. Gottsagen, however, steals the show at every turn in a role that, due to his own real-life Down's Syndrome, never patronizes its subject. Supporting actor extraordinaire John Hawkes, who has shown brilliantly sinister turns in films like Winter's Bone and Martha Marcy May Marlene, lends some urgency to this affair as a nefarious fisherman rival of LaBeouf's Tyler. |

It's one of those performances where I can't picture anyone else in his roll after watching it. That's one of the best compliments I can give.. Easily one of his best performances and one of my favorites of 2019.
It was nice seeing a very well done feel good movie without it being full of the easy cliches most have. Lastly, if anything I wish the movie was another 30-45 minutes longer to stretch a few subplots out and give the ending a bit more power but that probably had a lot to do with budget restraints being an indie.. Still a great movie that is very easy to recommend to just about anyone. |
