Default Film Grain from a PS3

I was watching 300 on my new Sony Bravia 32'' 720p monitor from my PS3, and since it has many dark scenes i noticed film grain, and i mean heavy film grain. I popped in another BD, Casino Royale, and i had the same problem. Is there any way to change/calibrate this immediatly? Thanks in advance.

It's been discussed extensively on the site, but the grain is the directors intent. 300 may be a little jarring if you didn't know it was supposed to be this way, but it's just a part of the experience. Others have said before that BD just make it much more noticable because of the resolution. I didn't remember the film in the theaters looking that way, but don't worry if you don't like it they're not all that way.

Brace for impact my friend! You just called down a hail storm of astronomical proportions!

To answer your question, those two films each have intentional grain. '300' more-so than 'Casino Royale', but it is there on purpose to convey the vision of the directors.

post-processing was done on the 300 print to include desaturation, ramped up contrast and a clamp down on the dark tones. this was accomplished to closer match the colour scheme of the graphic novel. Casino Royale was shot on a particular film stock.

You'll be noticing film grain a LOT more with Blu-Ray. Believe it or not, Directors CHOOSE to use film grain. Some directors feel the movie doesn't look real if it isn't saturated with grain.

Grain is an acquired taste. More and more directors are abandoning grain for better film-stocks that hold up under scrutiny better. More and more movies have almost no visible film grain.

Pop in the movie "Cars" and report back. If you see any film grain in that I'll eat my hat (it's a really nice hat too).

Cars wasn't shot on film, or even transferred from film to the Blu-Ray. It is pure digital HD goodness. That should show you what your Blu-Ray Player is really capable of.

You guys might want to avoid Ghostbusters when it comes out on Blu-Ray. That movie is grain city. You guys will have to stick with the VHS version if grain frightens you.

Grain is a part of film. It's not a bad thing.

please use the search function all you need to type in is grain and the two major grain threads will come up ... grain is because of the director not because of the ps3, or the tv(unless its the worst tv ever)

There is grain in 'Casino Royale'... it is intentional... it's just not ADDED to the final cut of the film as in '300'. The grain visible, which is relatively minute, is due to the equipment used while filming it. It isn't as bad as I made it sound, but it's presence is noticeable.

I learn to accept film grain on movies If there's a lot of them though, it does look disturbing but 300 was an exception. I haven't noticed a whole lot of it lately, you should buy one of those DVD that will calibrate your colors on your HDTV, maybe that's why I don't really notice grain much anymore...

It is interesting but film grain does not even faze me. I have seen 300 and Close Encounters both of which have a good amount of grain, I notice it but it does not detract from the movie. Maybe it is because of my background with photography/film but is it that you see the grain and are therefore distracted from the movie?

Default Yay another grain conversation

Hey, after we talk about grain for awhile can we talk about black bars too?

Seriously though, this has been discussed multiple times, in (EXCRUCIATING) depth.

Please search the threads.

Default drop your sharpness to 0

as my title says sharpness is the cause of many an issue ie the spidergrain movies they caused many an issue here i to sufferd from this untill i had an apifatree turn down shar pness as its hd there is no need to enhance the sharpness as i did with dvd it cured the whole grain issue not completly as mentioned by other members grain is normal and can be lived with except when sharpness is used as it defines the grain more than the image 300 however is a different cettle of fish but casino royal should improve my tv sony kdf50e2010 bravia or usa kdf50e 20000 wega with ps3 for blu ray spiderman picture is awesome after my apifaree

I love grain in movies like 300 and Gladiator.

I really think people who "hate" intended grain, are missing out on half of the movie.

The way I look at it;
If I pause Gladiator (the NEW re-mastered version) at any random point, it looks like a Renaissance painting on canvas. Especially Gladiator where painstaking efforts and costs were taken to give exuberant pallets of color.

Original canvas painting by nature have a "grain" effect, the texture of the canvas itself. Intended or not, it's my interpretation of such lucious films.
After all, film is a moving picture collection of stills...single 'paintings'.

To take away from the original art with DNR and EE for me is not a plus.

You opened a can of worms. Cut to the chase: it was an artistic effect in use even before film.
Have a few more examples in a old post on Grain
