FYE Manager, FUD Master - Blu-ray Forum

Hi,

I have a local FYE store and stop in sometimes and I'm impressed with the ability of the manager to spew FUD regarding the HD video formats. Back in spring when I asked where to find Blu Ray he claimed he wasn't familiar with it and then after I sort of tried to explain it he said they weren't going to get any and he wasn't sure they were going to keep making them.

Which I translated as "I just work here but I'm happy to misinform people given the chance."

Eventually they did get some Blu Rays and recently I stopped in and couldn't find them. I asked about them and he showed me where they were but felt the need to comment "Paramount and Dreamworks have dis-continued Blu Ray so I don't know whats going to happen there." Once again stunning me with his ignorance.

Hmm,.. I'm not able to see into the future either but didn't feel compelled to tell him that. I can make a good guess though and say that the HD DVD camp won't fully realize they lost this holiday season and the perception that there is still a war will continue to exist into early next year at least.

I got the feeling he never turns down the chance to throw out some useless FUD. (FUD = Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt.)

If it makes you feel any better, our local FYE shut down a while back because no one shopped there. Not exactly a direct vindication against your FYE's manager but at least thats one less place for a store manager of that company to spread any FUD

Yeah,

I was going to mention that on the bight side I'm always the only one in the store (apart from the employees.)

Why do I go there? Simple,.. give good store credit for DVD's that I trade in and then they will price match Best Buy when I use that credit to buy Blu Rays.

(Also,.. they have good Black Friday deals too.)

I don't think it's really his fault. I think this is a perfect example of what the Paramount deal has done to the public perception of the high-def format war. Blu-Ray was on the verge of declaring victory, and what this deal has done has further confused a public that was already on the fence about high-def media. It's a difficult situation because most people who are well-educated about HD know that HD-DVD has no chance of winning. But the casual observer doesn't know what to think. The way these studios are behaving, who could blame them?

hrmm my fye next to the place I work has some good managers and a big case of blu rays. I tend to chat with em explaining what's goin on and they convey to their people. p.s mine won't pricematch tho grrr.. either way lol they hook me up.

The chain as a whole is dying. Fye is about the only brand even remotely close to viable right now. Goody's took a hard hit.

Me? I blame Amazon and Best Buy.

How is his statement ignorant or FUD. It's the truth. It sounded like he was trying to inform his customer.

Ok I can see the notion that it's true but I think it's the way he said it with this notion of doom like "I don't know what's going to happen..." Hard to put across in typing it out but he's pretty discouraging to me each I try to go find the Blu Rays there.

Plus,.. if he doesn't know what's going to happen, why does anyone who wants to know where the Blu Rays are have to be warned about it? I think it's ignorance because with a little time looking at the facts he would know the effect of the Paramount deal is not significant. In 18 months they will be selling Blu Ray again and in the meantime the sales of Blu Ray haven't been adversely affected and sales is what matters most in analyzing the situation.

I like the FYE in Springfield, MO. They have a very helpful staff and some used Blu-ray discs in addition to a pretty good selection of new Blu-ray discs. I do believe the entire Musicland group of stores is struggling and I don't know that any can survive. I think Sam Goody is gone for good. Trans World Entertainment bought the Musicland group of stores, I think out of bankruptcy last year and probably hasn't figured out any way to make it work. Record stores are soon going to be a thing of the past, I am afraid.

I went into FYE last week for the first time in over a year.

Their BD section had many of the out of print Paramount titles, and many others to choose from.

I looked through the whole section, and only 1 BD was not marked at MSRP. I can't remember which one it was, but it was "on sale" for $34.99 intead of the retail of $39.99.

I'm shocked that these stores have been in business this long.

And then there is Suncoast Video, I don't even know where to begin dissecting that place.

The FYE in San Antonio sucks. I've walked in a few times, but have never stayed longer than 2 minutes.

the only good thing about Suncoast is that they have some STDVDs you cant find at any other store eg. best buy, CC , walmart or wherever. But I do agree that their prices are nuts.
