Default All Harry Potter Films Going To Get A Limited 3D Re-Release

Source: IGN

Quote:
With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 scoring big box office all over the globe at the weekend, Warner Bros. has announced 3D plans for the previous films in the franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "All of the Potter pics will be converted to 3D for limited theatrical re-release and a big push in the Blu-ray disc home entertainment format."

As for why it will be limited, Warners' domestic distribution president Dan Fellman says "I don't think a wide theatrical re-release could sustain the costs of a modern marketing campaign."

The studio had planned to release Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in 3D, but changed their mind when it became clear that there would be insufficient time to covert the film properly. Part 2 will still hit in the format next summer however.

Cool! While I don't think the movies will work out well what with being all dark and what not, it's clear for Part 1 that they shot with a 3D conversion in mind.

Looks like more blu-ray releases of the movies are coming which already makes the "Ultimate Editiions" not complete.

I was wondering that. Especially with BF going on, I'm willing to buy the movies for $10 each, but since most of them are just barebone I wonder if they will re-released them with new content/remastered (and I'm not talking about the UEs. I don't want one giant box).

Warner Brothers has immediately ordered printing of the world "Pen" on little decals so u can affix it in front of the title on ur now obsolete ultimate editions.

I have no problem with them coming out with a version a day if they want to. It's when my only option is 3D that I become upset.

Well, I can say the ultimate editions will be my last purchases of these films except for the two new ones, I will get the regular release. I have these on DVD, the HD-DVD gift box, individual blu ray and ultimate sets.

I will only purchase if I see new steelbooks.

You're not seeing any MORE Harry Potter though. You're paying a higher price to see a half-assed conversion job.

Despite being a huge Harry Potter fan, I'm on the fence about this. You know what would immediately seal the deal for me and, I'm sure, many other fans? Extended cuts. You want to get people who've seen all these films in theaters, bought them on DVD, bought them on Blu-ray, and re-bought them in Ultimate Editions to once again shell out money? Don't just sell them 3-D; sell them never-before-seen footage. I'd purchase my tickets in a heartbeat.

You can even go George Lucas on these films and make tweaks for continuity's sake. For example:

* Replace Elizabeth Sprigg's Fat Lady in SS with Dawn French from PoA.
* Replace the CG Voldemort in SS with Ralph Fiennes' face and voice
* Change the locations of Hagrid's Hut and the Whomping Willow in SS and CoS with where they're found from PoA onward
* Replace Christian Coulson's Tom Riddle in CoS with Frank Dillane's from HBP
* Add the Hogwarts elements into earlier films that were created for later ones (the clock tower, courtyard, owlery, astronomy tower, etc.)

Some people may be aghast at that, but so long as the theatrical/original extended versions are made available to the public, there won't be the huge backlash that follows Star Wars around. The only thing I wouldn't touch would be Richard Harris' Dumbledore, as it would feel disrespectful to digitally replace him with Michael Gambon.
