Default Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018)

Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Fresh off the hills of the victory earned in the Tournament of Power and instinctively driven to lust for battle due to being members of the Saiyan Warrior Race, Son Goku and Saiyan-Prince Vegeta spend their days training in hopes of fighting new, even stronger opponents in the future. So, as if the universe heard their cries for combat, a spacefaring vessel descends from the skies, and among the beings who emerge from it are a pair who surprise the seemingly only two survivors of the Saiyan race: the elderly Saiyan Paragas and his prodigious son, Broly. Hot with anger and desiring revenge, Paragas recalls that Prince Vegeta's father, King Vegeta, banished the infant Broly to the stars in fear that his innately unrivaled level of power might've been an indication that he was the prophesied Legendary Super Saiayan and would make him a challenge to Prince Vegeta for the throne. Hence, the elderly Saiyan orders his son to attack, and a momentous battle - the likes of which no one has ever seen - ensues.

Not without Vegeta's help this time, I'm assuming, based on Vegeta's importance in the story. What do you think of the animation? It looks incredibly fluid and beautifully illustrated.

Son Goku will never lose lose. Im still watching Dragon Ball Super TV Show. Still 50 or more episodes until get into this movie. No spoils please. OFC Vegeta is important fighting new enemies but in the end even after being beaten or dead Son Goku will always win. You cant beat that.

I think that DB Super is terrible; the animation is cheap, some of the character designs aren't consistent with the traditional art style of Akira Toriyama (e.g. Lord Zeno and his attendants, etc), and a lot of it is comprised of fanservice. I think that the new forms, Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue and Super Saiyan Rose, are stupid; they're just new colors tacked onto old forms, and they look tacky. However, I'm still excited for this movie, because the story sounds good and the animation looks incredible.

I have never gotten into Dragonball but it seems to have a huge fan base. I did watch the live action movie but I kind of feel like that was some BS. Would it be best to just start from season 1 or would someone be okay just watching some random movies they put out?

Dragon Ball: Complete Series Seasons 1-5 DVD Box Sets

Dragonball Z Seasons 1-9 Collection

You don't have to watch Dragonball in order to understand Dragonball Z, but it provides context and is fun and funny (whereas Z is a bit more serious, though still funny at times).

As for this movie, I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to understand what's happening without having watched the series, considering that it begins with a lengthy flashback sequence that provides the context for the rest of the movie.

Yep! If it'll be available at a theater near me when it's released, it'll be the first Dragon Ball movie that I'll see on the big screen.

Is there another thread for this? I'm surprised there isn't much talk about this. Although the second film of the modern films is still my favourite, this was great. The theme for Gogeto was amazing. Broly was god damn insane & the final fight had some great animation.

There's the Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray thread in the Anime section, so it's kind of a mix of this thread and that.

My local cinema has almost sold out of tickets (one screening only) for the 24th Jan session.

Made $2.4 million Friday, best per screen average in the top 20. Between this, They Shall Not Grow Old, and the BTS concerts, the "event screening" business has really taken flight in just the past few months.

Question for the fans: I know next to nothing about Dragon Ball Z, so would this movie make any sense whatsoever to me if I went to watch it while it's in theaters? Or would I be completely and utterly lost from the start?

I wouldn't recommend seeing it if you have no prior Dragon Ball knowledge. I like DB and the characters but I'm nowhere near a hardcore fan, in fact, I barely consider myself a fan. I saw this movie with my friend who is a die hard fan and he went crazy for it, loved it and wanted to see it again immediately after we got out. It was exciting because of how intense the movie gets but it left me feeling pretty meh about the whole thing. Punching and screaming doesn't do anything for me and that was the focus of the movie.

This movie is like 75% punching and screaming and this will have no effect on you without being invested in the characters beforehand. A lot of the Dragon Ball franchise is based around nostalgia from what I can tell. If you didn't grow up with the franchise or follow it up until this point then I don't think you'll enjoy it.

Now, if you wanted this to be your gateway into the Dragon Ball franchise then I would possibly recommend it. This movie gives backstory/origins for Goku and Vegeta's characters, new origin for Broly and all that. This would be a good way to find out if you want to go back and watch hundreds of episodes worth of the various DB anime series.

Yeah, I'm not a hardcore fan by any means either. I have never seen an episode of Dragon Ball Super for instance, though have seen a decent amount of original DB and DBZ, as well as some movies (like the two most recent animated ones which do have some ties into this, and the live action Dragon Ball Evolution which is naturally non canon with this version), and had no problems following it. But if you don't at least know who the major characters are and the basic set up of the world, I could see it being very confusing (I also agree about the pacing being weird, the first half is basically just set up and the second half just one long action scene that can get tiring by the end, maybe breaking it up with more but shorter action sequences earlier on would have been better).

Not sure watching a ton before is needed, but maybe a quick Wikipedia read about the overview of the franchise.

Thumbs up

I'm a long-time DB fan, and I enjoyed it. It retcons a lot of the older lore, but for the most part, I thought it was well-done, and added more depth. The big battle(s) is quite intense, and Broly's power is astonishing. The animation is excellent, for the most part, except for three scenes where it went to pot and reverted to TV quality.

I recommend it for fans, but not for newbies. I'd actually like to see it again in theater, but for some reason it doesn't qualify for A-List.

I saw this last night and I loved it. I've been a lifelong Dragon Ball fan and this is easily the best movie they've produced.

The other Dragon Ball movies were decent at best but didn't really matter to the overall story
[Show spoiler]Battle of Gods and Resurrection F are now "overwritten" by Super,
but this changes all that. This is a natural continuation to Super and even adds more canonical material prior to the events of the original Dragon Ball.

I couldn't be happier with this, and I intend to see it again Wednesday.
