5.1 or 6.1 DTS MA mix of Mono or Dolby Surround film

I was reading the review of True Grit and Top Gun, and it got me thinking how can there be a DTS MA 5.1 or a 6.1 mix of a Mono and a Dolby Surround film respectively?

But how can you claim its bit for bit to the studio master when you retroactively upmix the sound?

It gets remixed first. That's the new master. The lossless encode is bit-for-bit identical to the remix.

The BD releases of classics often include a lossless encode of the original mix, which is generally cleaned up to make it sound as good as possible.
