2010 seems like a good movie soundtrack year. What have been the mainstream movies with unconventional scores over the years?
For example: The Social Network: Trent Reznor Tron Legacy: Daft Punk Flash Gordon: Queen Legend: Goblin Can anything think of any other films in the same boat? |

Thomas Newman's Oscar-nominated score for Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events was a little different than we were expecting for a Jim Carrey kids film:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsZ75J8_jNE And Danny Elfman's Arab-tinged score deserved a much better movie than the Ang Lee "Hulk". ![]() |

I concur with the mention of the "Friday Night Lights" score, the "Tron Legacy" score, the "Social Network" score, the "Fight Club" score, and the "Watchmen" score. Some of the ones I love are:
"Akira," composed by Soji Yamashiro (album done by Geinoh Yamashirogumi) "Black Hawk Down," composed by Hans Zimmer "Blade Runner," performed by Vangelis (it's growing on me) "Book of Eli," composed by Atticus Ross "Constantine," composed by Brian Tyler and Klaus Badelt "The Cowboy Bebop" movie, performed by the Seatbelts (Yoko Kanno; the show's soundtrack is great too) "District B-13," performed by Da Octapuss "Doom," composed by Clint Mansell (lots of metal! ![]() "Dune," performed by Toto (a fave of mine) "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," composed by Brian Tyler "The Fifth Element," composed by Eric Serra "The Fountain," composed by Clint Mansell "GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra," composed by Alan Silvestri "GoldenEye," composed by Eric Serra (a fave of mine) "Gone in 60 Seconds," composed by Trevor Rabin "The Island," composed by Steve Jablonsky "Into the Wild," performed by Eddie Vedder "The Italian Job," composed by John Powell "Kids," performed by Folk Implosion (never saw the movie, but I have a few of these tracks and they're cool) "London," composed by the Crystal Method (never saw the movie, but I love the soundtrack) "The Matrix Reloaded," composed by Don Davis and Juno Reactor ("Mona Lisa Overdrive," "Teahouse," "Burly Brawl," and Rob Dougan's "Chateau" being the stand-out tracks) "The Matrix Revolutions," same as above ("Navras" and "Tetsujin" being the standout tracks primarily) "Ocean's 11," "Ocean's 12," and "Ocean's 13," all performed by David Holmes "Planet Terror," composed by Robert Rodriguez "Red Planet," various artists (a fave of mine) "Resident Evil," composed by Marilyn Manson "Requiem for a Dream," composed by Clint Mansell and the Kronos Quartet "Rollerball," composed by Eric Serra (yeah the movie stinks, but I love the music) "Sin City," composed by Robert Rodriguez "Spy Game," composed by Harry-Gregson Williams "Stealth," composed by BT "Swordfish," performed by Paul Oakenfold "300," composed by Tyler Bates "Tomb Raider and the Cradle of Life," composed by Alan Silvestri Both "Transformers" movies, composed by Steve Jablonsky "28 Days Later," composed by John Murphy "Unleashed," performed by Massive Attack (a fave of mine) "War," composed by Brian Tyler (yeah, iffy movie, like the music though) "Where the Wild Things Are," performed by Karen O |

I love the first 2 Daft Punk albums, but Human After All sucked, and the Tron soundtrack was absolutely horrible and not what I was expecting from a Tron and Daft Punk collaboration. |

Definitely agree with Tron Legacy! I love it! It rocked at IMAX! It's like being at a rave party! Just downloaded the End Credits From iTunes!
Some of my favorite film scores this year, though conventional, have been memorable: Inception (Time), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Obliviate), Black Swan (Perfection) and Toy Story 3 (So Long). It has been a very good year for film scores! |

I've just recieved my Blu-ray of Piranha 3D and watching again, after seeing it in the theatre, I noticed this has quite a weird score with a mix of electronic, mainstream music and more tradtional music for the dramatic sequences.
So that's my unconventional score. ![]() |
