Default Backing up PS3 HDD when PS3 is fragged

Is there any way to back up the PS3 HDD of a fragged system? My friend's MGS4 80GB unit is giving the YLOD. We attempted to reseat the heatsinks but that did not fix the issue. Has anyone found a way to back up the HSS via external PC case or via a different PS3?

Can't you remove the HD and try it on another PS3?

I can but wasn't sure if the working PS3 would try to reformat it.

The system is turning on for about 1 second when the light goes green, then yellow, then blinks red. The fan is working, and there was no sign of overheating near the chips. It never shut down while playing. I am thinking it has to be the power supply, even though it powers on briefly.

Now that I looked at some more examples of YLOD systems I think we need to heatgun the chips. I guess I'll try that next.

Good luck. I had YLOD a few weeks ago and the heatgun fix didn't remedy it.

It will if placed into a PS3. On the other hand, there's nothing special about the PS3 hard drive, so you should* be able to get some data recovery out of placing it into a normal computer.

You'll lose console-locked saves, but you should be able to keep the rest.

*I haven't actually tried this but don't think there is any reason why it wouldn't work.

The ps3 hdd is encrypted. You will not be able to read it on anything other than the ps3 it was in. If you put it in another ps3, it will automatically be formated. You could theoritically get the information off via PC, but good luck breaking the encryption.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. They of course want the original HDD in it when you send it in too, and my friend never backed it up like I told him to. He may be SOL.

If you're not comfortable or used to fixing the YLOD with a heat gun, you might consider sending it off for repair. I'm having http://www.sudburymods.com fix my 60 GB PS3 right now.

On Saturday I used my heat gun to reflow the GPU in my HP laptop, and that brought it back to life. However, I didn't really want to risk cooking my PS3 GPU or board, so I'm having Sudbury do it. They are the only shop I found that offers a lifetime guarantee (most offer 30 days). Included in the repair price is a PS3 fan modification that keeps the PS3 from overheating again. You can see a video of the modification on their web site.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. I'll run it by my friend. He is out of town this week but we intend to attempt repair when he returns. I will certainly share this option with him.

Who is asking for the original HDD? Is this a third party service company?

Sony used to when you sent decks in for service. Haven't checked with any 3rd party shops yet.
