United Kingdom LOTR Extended Cut Semi Confirmed for 2011!!!!

Found this on the DVD forum! I'm currently looking for the source! Will update!

Quote:
What's more, our sources are NOW telling us that WHV (and their now in-house New Line label) is ALSO planning to release Peter Jackson's long-awaited The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions on Blu-ray sometime this year. No kidding. We suspect that, now that The Hobbit films are finally about to begin filming, the studio is eager to get more product on store shelves to keep the franchise fresh in the minds of fans. The Extended Rings films on BD are the obvious choice for this year. Farther down the line, of course, there will be the obvious Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D versions of The Hobbit films, and sooner or later an "ultimate" box set of all the films with all new extras custom created by Jackson. Anyway, our sources tell us to expect some kind of official news on all this (re: Rings: Extended and Kubrick) from the studio in the next several weeks.

When and if this gets officially confirmed, it will officially make 2011 the best year Blu-ray will ever have. Star Wars, The Lion King, Jurassic Park, all we need now this year is Indiana Jones.

Well there's the remaining Disney classics, as well as Finding Nemo for our Pixar collections, the remaining Bonds, and several popular requests from Universal's back catalog (e.g. Jaws, The Big Lebowski).

This is good news.

I *really* hope they include the Theatricals as well via seamless branching. This would be a great opportunity to give people the chance to watch both cuts if they want, I'd much rather that than have 2 separate Trilogies on the shelf next to each other (because I'd keep the Theatricals as well). Plus, if they do some remastering work (which, given the volume of complaints about the Theatrical BD release, I think is a distinct possibility) it will mean we will essentially get a remastering of both cuts, and the Theatrical cuts won't be forever saddled with inferior transfers.

It'll also be great to have each of the Extended versions of the film on one disc as opposed to spread across two.

I've mentioned this in an earlier post. Is it even possible with the music cues etc to have seamless branching? It sounds complicated to me. They could just include a 4 disc set of each film and have the theatricals and extended versions on seperate discs. I'm not sure the extras need 2 discs though and could do without them if their in SD if it will keep the price down.

question for me is, will they try to fit each film on 1 disk or split them into 2 again.

I would've thought that they'd put each film on one disc with maybe a second disc per film for extras, so a six disc boxset in theory.

Late 2011 is shaping up to be an expensive time. What with Star Wars and the rumoured Jurassic Park trilogy and now maybe this, my wallet is going to take a hammering.

I'd imagine it would be one disc for each film and it will be an attraction to double-dip, no-one likes flippers or swapping disc. It depends on the encoding methods I guess.

I've asked before but what's the longest film on blu-ray so far?

Interesting question as Return of the King is about 4hrs long, hopefully they will just make the most of the 50GB disc with a limited menu that doesnt take up too much space.

I wouldnt be opposed to 2 discs, as long as it wasn't 2x25GB, that would defeat the point.

The LE DVD's were on one disk each and they didn't suffer too badly I guess they could cut the fanclub credits at the end but some guys might be disappointed if they did (or they might update them so they might run longer still).

I wonder if they'll be released separately or just as a set?
