Talking Guillermo del Toro Will Direct "At the Mountains of Madness"

Oh my god......................

Quote:
When director Guillermo del Toro spoke with Steve at the Saturn Awards, he was very pessimistic that his 3D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness would ever come to fruition due to its lack of commercial viability. He explained, “It is very difficult for the studios to take the step of doing an R-rated tentpole with a tough ending [and] no love story.” You know, unless the man who produced and directed the two highest-grossing movies ever offers his services.

Deadline reports that James Cameron will produce the film, and was a major selling point in securing funds from Universal — del Toro will begin pre-production in the coming weeks with a summer 2011 3D shoot in mind.

This has long been a passion project for del Toro, who first set up the adaptation at DreamWorks in 2004. Del Toro has been tied up by The Hobbit for the past two years, but freed up space in his calendar when he departed the project in May. Del Toro made a big splash at Comic-Con with the announcement that he was spearheading a reboot of The Haunted Mansion at Disney, but currently his only official duties are writing and producing with the option to direct.

The director has expressed the desire to adapt his “favorite novel” Frankenstein for the screen, but took advantage of Cameron’s interest in the project to return to At Mountains of Madness for his next directorial effort.

Here’s a brief synopis of Lovecraft’s novella:

The story is written in first-person perspective by the geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins and a dangerous secret beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas.

This sounds pretty cool. I need to start reading some of Lovecraft's stuff, I think I have this book laying around (gift) but I've never read it

This is actually one of my most favorite stories and I doubt it can adequately be turned into a movie,
but I'm alway open for a good surprise.
And should they succeed in transposing the story to a movie,
it will surely be the most scaring one we've ever seen.

Very cool. I have not read a single word by Lovecraft but I am a big Guillermo del Toro fan. If this is one of his dream projects, I am sure it will be great. I am also glad that a studio is willing to do a high budget R movie. Seems like a rare risk.

I just hope he someday gets back to finish Hellboy

Del Toro has been talking about this one for years. I would love to see it happen. H.P. Lovecraft is notoriously difficult to adapt. Anybody who's ever read At the Mountains of Madness (or any of his work) can tell you that it's high on atmosphere and low on story. If anyone can pull it off I would bet on Del Toro.

But if anybody could direct something so visually surreal and dark, and stunning it would definitely be GDT, as we've seen him do time and time again. He is the master at things like this and I wouldn't expect anything short of amazing considering how much love he has for this project. I wonder if they will use any of Cameron's Avatar technology for the creatures?

Yeah, I have no idea what he's talking about either, lol. Producing doesn't look anything like the word I have in the title.

Very true. So far, Stewart Gordon has been the only one that has done a decent job at it. I'm really hoping that Del Toro does good on this one.

Guillermo del Toro and James Cameron. So it will be gorgeously crafted and have lots of high-speed action, can't wait.

Made my day! I love Lovecraft stories, and I agree if someone can pull off another good Lovecraft movie it will be Del Toro.

Give me In the Mouth of Madness on blu to hold me over please...

Or, lots of PC leftwing preaching, girls in sweaty tanktops with machine guns, and supernatural characters that all look like Sackboy.

Well Lovecraft stories have not been treated well in the past by filmmakers but I have faith in this one. I will be, ok not the first one in line but it won't be a rental either. Will see it in theaters. Now time to read my Lovecraft books once again

been waiting this since del Toro 1st time announced this years ago. with Cameron, well - not so thrilled. But hopefully del Toro can keep his view and make this the way he wants. Have read almost everything from Lovecraft and this is one of his best works.

Any thing from Ron Howards Lovecraft film :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1405521/

does any one have imdb pro account ?
