Hong Kong Asian cinema romance movies...

Does anyone have some good recommendations on asian romance movies. Like for example, two I have really enjoyed are perhaps love, and chungking express. Any other hidden gems out there worth checking out that are similar to these?

My Sassy Girl is my favorite. Others would be Il Mare, Fly me to Polaris. That's all I remember on top of my head.

Man, Fly Me To Polaris was a good one. Ceclia Cheung definitely knows how to cry. That's a movie that makes you tear up.

Another good one was Cyborg Girl. It's kind of like My Sassy Girl, but replaced with a Cyborg.

Yea, I haven't met anyone that didn't cry watching Fly me to Polaris. That one is a tearjerker.

I didn't like I'm a cyborg. Just couldn't get into that one.

I agree with the other suggestions posted but if you liked Chungking Express you should watch another by Wang Kar-Wai called "as tears go by". It is also an older movie but very well made.

No, no not I'm a Cyborg...Cyborg Girl. It's a Japanese movie not the Korean one.

I didn't really like Boku no kanojo wa cyborg (My Girlfriend Is a Cyborg, a.k.a. Cyborg Girl), although Haruka Ayase (the lead actress) is very easy on the eyes and it had some neat special effects. Ayase is in a recent movie called Oppai Volleyball, in which she plays a teacher who agrees to show her breasts to the volleyball team if they can manage to win a game.

As for Asian romance movies, the selection available on Blu-ray is still limited. I would suggest Secret with Jay Chou, although some didn't care for it (there's a review on this site). Johnnie To's Sparrow is also pretty good (it's in the spirit of a French New Wave film). If you liked Chungking Express, you should see Fallen Angels, but it is not on Blu-ray yet (the remastered DVD from Kino isn't bad, though).

These aren't on Blu-ray, but I would recommend Love Letter and April Story, two Japanese films directed by Shunji Iwai.

Would you call Sparrow a "romance" movie though? I guess it sort of is...it's just on a completely different wavelength. Highly stylish though...great film.

Love Letter and April Story are definitely great. In fact, anything by Shunji Iwai is great. Hands down.

Since you're mentioning C. Express and Fallen Angels you can't neglect In the Mood For Love.

they're not on blu-ray yet, but theres quite a number of films i definitely would suggest.

HK movies
- Love on a Diet
- Needing you (both films are with Sammi Cheng and Andy Lau)
most of Johnny to or Wai Ka Fai's movies are prime examples by the way.

Korean movies
- My Sassy girl (of course)
- Arahan (if you can call this a love story, its more of a mix bag, but i like it)
- My Tutor Girl
- Almost Love (one of the few that matches My sassy girl)

Or what about Failan.

Sort of a long distance romantic tragedy kind of thing.

All these movies are pretty good except for All About Women which is sort of a mess but it's still worth seeing it for Tsui Hark doing his thing behind the camera.

All About Women
Cape No. 7 - There is a Taiwanese blu-ray.
Dream Lovers
Lost in Time (The pinnacle of Cecilia Cheung's acting career)
200 Pounds Beauty
My Sassy Girl (this movie cannot be mentioned enough)

Does "Kaidan" count? It's mostly a love story...with some ghosts that come out in the end.

I kinda liked it.

Loved Cape No 7. It is one of my favorites in recent memory and has a great soundtrack too. I agree with everyone who mentioned My Sassy Girl. It is a must see and a classic.
