Default Direct TV advice

Im thinking of getting DTV, here in a couple of weeks and am unsure about a couple of things. Should I just order direct from them or go to like Best Buy to order it? Secondly, can you get your local channels like cbs, abc, nbc and fox in HD, I didnt see a package that had that. So any adivce from you direct tv viewers, on packages, or gimmicks I should be aware of? Thanks

It all depends on where your locals are. Check the Directv website or give a zip code and I'm sure someone will check. In the NYC area we get all locals in HD including UPN and WB. Whatever the are called now. My9?

Again, check the Directv website and see what deals they are giving? You will probably get a better deal from Directv than you will Best Buy.

I'm going to blatantly hijack this perfectly good DirecTV thread since I have something I'm considering myself. I hope the OP doesn't mind.

I want to do the upgrade soon to their new MPEG4 hardware and all the rest of that. Preferably, I don't want to call them and be at the mercy of whoever they might randomly send me to do the work. I have at least two options that I'd rather use instead.

In any event...what becomes of my old hardware? I don't really like the idea of me just taking a bath on all of it outright. Are there any rebates? Trade ins? etc.?

Directv will most likely send you a new dish for free. I'm not sure what they offer in terms of receivers. Since everything is leased now, there may be a nominal charge. You will probably have to sign up for two years.

I checked zip codes and the OP may be SOL as far as locals with Directv.

JTK, ya sure you don't want to call Value Electronics to do the work?

If you go direct, use a friend that has it for an extra $50 off your bill. I think your friend gets the same. If you can't find someone, you can use me (PM me and I will get you the details)

I started getting DTV 2 Sundays ago and the HD content looks the best I've seen so far since FioS isn't available in Philly...

I have no complaints with the content and the quality of it...

Comcast has recently lowered their quality to somewhere in the ballpark of Dish and I just dropped Comcast in January for Dish and dropped Dish 2 weeks ago...

so I have a recent recollection of what the HD content looked like...

however, some of the best/consistent HD content is on the premium channels since you're getting something at it's best (besides Blu) when it's aired on Showtime, HBO, Starz etc.

If you do not want a HD DVR you may be able to get the reciever free but you have to pay a rental fee each month for each one.

If the OP is a new customer you can get it free even HD DVR with installation but you have to commit to two years i believe. I liked it better when you bought your own equipment and owned it.

Directv is just not run like it used to be 10 years ago. Taken as a whole it is now only a slighter better value proposition than most competing cable packages. The main reason to get it now is if you have to get the NFL Sunday ticket. If something like FIOS is ever offered in your area get that instead.

Agreed...Until FiOS decides to add more HD and catch up to Directv. At the moment Directv is the HD leader in quantity and quality.
