Angry Stacked Discs

Some distributors are now using cases that stack discs instead of placing them on individual trays. This has been known to cause scratches and other problems, sometimes rendering the discs unplayable.

Amazingly, big studios are doing this, not just third-party companies releasing B-movies.

I would encourage everyone to contact the relevant studios to ask them to stop this practice.

Disney: http://www.disneystudioshelp.com/ContactUs

Sony: consumer@SPHECustomerSupport.sony.com

Universal: http://www.universalstudios.com/hvfaq.php

Warner: http://www.warnerbros.com/help/customer-service.html

--------------------------------------------------

Disney
The Avengers 3D
Frankenweenie 3D
Iron Man 3D
Lincoln 4-disc
Wreck-It-Ralph 3D
2-movie collections (such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Pocahontas, etc.)

Entertainment One
Being Human Season 1

Sony
Hotel Transylvania 3D

Universal
House M.D. Season 6
House M.D. Season 7
House M.D. Season 8

Warner
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition
4-Film Favorites collections (such as the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher Batmans)
The Great Gatsby (2013) 3D combo pack
The Great Gatsby (2013) 2D Target Exclusive combo pack
Pacific Rim 2D combo pack
Pacific Rim 3D combo pack
Pacific Rim 3D limited edition

--------------------------------------------------

THS was able to come up with a solution, though it involves being lucky and buying a movie that comes with a certain type of 3-disc case and then putting a double-sided flipper tray inside that 3-disc case, thereby creating a custom 4-disc case. Here's his relevant post:

I then transferred the discs and artwork from my "Avengers 3D: Target Exclusive" set. Now it's a slim 4-Disc case. It fits perfectly with no bulging whatsoever, and therefore my sleeve fits beautifully.

here's some pics:

Hope that helps.

This is one thing that actually stops me from buying a movie. Every BD I have bought that came stacked, had at least one small scratch on it. None were bad enough to affect playback, but I would rather not always have myself a guaranteed scratched disc due to this stacking.

Some of the multiple-disc sets from the UK are coming this way now. I doubt the studios will move away from it.

I hate the stacked disks too plus it makes them harder to get out most of the time and it makes me feel like I am going to break it in half just trying to get it out

I think Hotel Transylvania 3D came like this?
I bought it used and it was missing the DVD disc, but the hub seemed really tall, tall enough to fit two discs on 1.

Thanks, online reviews and customer comments at Amazon indicate this as well. I'll add it to the OP.

That's why I avoid packaging such as the Alien Anthology. Sliding discs in and out of cardboard is just begging for trouble.

I'm probably the only one who likes these cases. They let me add extra discs like exclusives without having to use oversized cases that mess up the artwork. I'll take them off your hands!

Why don't the studios simply use cases with enough individual trays for each disc in the first place?

extra trays equals more plastic equals more costs to make and ship

Its just a cost cutting measure and nowhere near as bad as eco cases, I'm glad some switched to the thinner plastic, those at least offer a little more protection.

even if it saves like a couple pennies per copy, that's like a hundred thousand saved for the millions of copies sent out for release day

I'd prefer it if the case were plastic, but I don't see it causing problems for me; I don't think I watch the movies enough that repeatedly sliding the discs in and out of the case would cause a problem.

I understand the rationale, but we're primarily talking about Disney, which tends to have the highest MSRPs and the fewest price drops.

Should add FOX to the list with their discs on cardboard in boxed sets:
Alien Anthology
Die Hard 25th
Star Wars Complete
