Could MPEG-1 Be Used? - Blu-ray Forum

Just wondering if MPEG-1 could be used on the Blu-ray format in 720p? MPEG-1 doesn't require any licensing fees and I was wondering.

You can make BD data disc's with the MPEG-1 codec that would for sure play on any computer OS (Win,mac,Linux) with software that supports MPEG-1. Now will it play on all standalone BD players?

as far as I know MPEG-1 i not in BD video specs, so I would say most likely no

I thought MPEG-1 was only used to compress audio/video to 1.5 mb/s for use on video CDs etc - 1.15 mb/s video and 350kb/s audio. This is quite a bit less then Blu-ray's max data transfer rate (audio/video) of 54.0 Mbp/s (1.5x).

MPEG1 is not part of the Blu-ray specification, so it would not be guaranteed to play on all BD players. You would need to make it MPEG2 with AC3 audio for the lowest royalty/licence fees.
