Default When are they coming out with a DECENT portable player?

Seriously, is it that hard to make one with a screen similar to tablets?

As of last Christmas 2013, the best one is the Sony 9" portable blu ray player. I managed to see one on display at Best Buy. Suffice it to say, it's a big POS. And they wanted $200 for that?!

Unlike DVDs Blu-ray's have additional options like BD-live features requiring sophisticated chips.
That being said, Good "portable" Blu-ray players have always been hard to find and the best one, to my knowledge. has been discontinued. Even that one was not a dedicated player but took the form of a laptop computer. The Sony VAIO F3D laptop which supports a 16" professional quality 3D attached display. Still use mine daily. It plays all DVDs, Blu-rays and Blu-ray 3D media with 1080P Full HD Active 3D resolution.

The best portable Blu-ray players are Notebook computers with a BD-ROM drive. One can get true 1080P LCD screen or a lower cost 720P LCD screen in a Notebook computer. Some Notebook computers have a HDMI output also for hooking the Blu-ray Notebook computer up to a hotel room flat panel. REDBOX $1.50 Blu-ray rentals are popular when traveling.

There are internal BD-ROM drives and external USB 3.0 BD-ROM drives that work with portable Notebook computers.

I heard that Sony is about to produce a notebook with a Blu-ray drive, but I do not know whether this is true.

Unless these notebooks with BD drive come in less than 10" in length, they are NOT portable.

That is one opinion. IMO, as long as it is easily carried, lighter and smaller than comparable consumer components, it is portable. And for visual detail, the bigger the portable display the better for the intended audience.

By definition alone Notebooks and Laptops are portable.

I'd like something like a tablet (it would probably have to be twice as thick) with a drive built in. I like my portable DVD player but having the drive and screen as separate pieces (even though you can fold it into one) makes it too cumbersome.

Be aware that both of those players don't have much more than a DVD resolution screen.

Would be nice to have a plain simple easy to use portable blu Ray player to play blu Ray movies. Not everyone has plasma widescreen tvs with hdmi blah blah.

I just got a Sylvania portable DVD player. Just used it earlier and watched Haunted House 1 while I was sitting on my bed

With streaming as prevalent as it is now, the market for any portable disc player is way to small for any company to even consider making one.

I don't care about "streaming"

I just want a simple easy to use portable blu Ray player to play and watch movies and bonus features and not to mess around with switching the damn tv to hdmi etc

Your best bet is a bit of a DIY job, you can pick up a portable monitor and a HDMI sender (or a nice thin lead) and put them together with a player. Obviously you're limited to portability, but if you wanted something to watch in bed, you'd be fine.

If he can’t handle switching the inputs on his tv, I really doubt a DIY solution is something he would be capable of.

I'm glad my TV can switch itself on when I turn my BD player on. HDMI CEC is a neat feature, when it's not turning on things by itself!
