Default New to home theater systems. Please help

Hi guys,

I think I've finally strayed away from the HTIB route. I came across the Onkyo TX-NR509 and love what it features for the price - DLNA, the USB integration and networking. So I think I will be picking up this receiver and adding a speaker set. I can get the receiver for $299.99 from either Amazon or Vanns.

Now I am looking for a decent speaker package with a sub. Does anyone have any good suggestions for speaker packages with sub for around $300-$350?

Also, what else will I need to complete my setup once I have my receiver and speakers? I know I'll need speaker wire and banana plugs. Can someone suggest a good wire and decent plugs? And can anyone recommend a good cheap surge protector? Is there anything that I am missing that I should need?

Thanks

For cables and plugs I use Blue Jeans Cables.

Most of the people on this forum use Monoprice.

Either would be good.

Here is the best bet for a start up system in your price range, it has 8" woofers built in to the towers for that deep bass, and that will hold you until you can afford to get an external subwoofer.

I saw those, but I just don't have the room for them, plus they don't match any of my equipment.

if you don't have room for those, where are you going to put a subwoofer?

What are you trying to accomplish? do you want speakers that are the size of satelites but better so they can be placed somewhere like a shelf or TV Stand?

Yes I am looking for speakers in the smaller range. I was looking at the Klipsch HD 500's which I can get for $299.99 right now. Any opinions on those?

So basically you want a HTIB, but built from seperates.....?

Youll notice an improvement, but honestly, it will still sound like a HTiB.

I just don't have the time, money or space to buy separate components. I am no audiophile so speaker packages don't really bother me.

no one says you have to be, but if you want to get away from a HTiB setup, and want small speakers, then these would be one of the few things Id suggest.

http://www.amazon.com/Energy-CB-5-Bo...6033400&sr=1-2

or these

http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...coustics-cs23b

or these

http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...coustics-cs26b

and then just piece it all together as funds allow.

Just buy the cheapest ones you can find although I don't know why you would waste your time and money if you don't really care. You could also just use your HTIB speakers.

You could get the Onkyo S5400 for well under $500. It's at a little over $400 at Amazon with free shipping. With the Onkyo S5400 not only are you getting a full-featured 7.1 receiver with front usb port, you're getting a decent compact speaker package featuring a 10 inch self-powered subwoofer.

If you get the Klipsch HD 500 you'd be paying around $300 for a 5.1 speaker package that has a passive 8 inch subwoofer. You'd need to buy an amplifier to power these speakers up.

So I am about to pull the trigger on my purchase. I've decided to go with the Onyko TX-NR509 receiver along with the Klipsch HD 500 5.1 speakers. I haven't read any real bad review about the speakers and alot of people love them. It's a system that fits my needs, budget and space. I appreciate the help that you guys have given.

Let me know if I am missing something from my purchase for initial setup:

I also plan on buying the Onkyo UWF-1 networking adapter when it's released for wi-fi capability.

You need to double the banana plugs to set of 10. First 5 set goes to the speakers, the second set of 5 goes to the back of your receiver. You will need the plugs for both ends of the speaker wire. You don't have to have them on both ends, but if your going to do one end, might as well do both.

You don't need the optical cable with your new receiver and PS3, You will need an HDMI cable. I don't know your full setup, but you may still need an optical cable, but not for your PS3 to the receiver.

I don't know what TV you have, but a standard connection of a HDMI from the receiver to the TV will take care of all your outputs to the TV.

Each device will need its own input into the receiver. Such as PS3, XBOX 360, cable or satellite boxes. They need their own input into the receiver.

Only thing I know is that you have an PS3, so you will need at least two HDMI cables(1 from the PS3 to the receiver, 1 from the receiver to TV)

I have a few HDMI cables laying around so I don't think that will be an issue. For PS3 audio, since I am new to this whole receiver stuff, I only need 1 HDMI cable going from the PS3 to the back of the receiver (HDMI in) and then one going to the TV (HDMI out)?

As for the banana plugs, the back of the Klipsch speakers only have wire clamps.

My bad, about the speakers, I have the quintet's and I use the plugs on them. I was thinking the set your getting was the same, except your getting a subwoofer with it as a set.

As far as the HDMI cable, yes, HDMI will carry the HD video and HD audio. Your going to hear a big difference if you have not use HDMI for audio in the past.

Once you get it all connected, just make sure to go into the audio setup on the PS3 and select the HDMI cable for audio out, and select all the audio codec's
