Default Facebook

Please stop excluding members from contests on the basis that they don't want to share their interest in Blu-ray.com with their facebook friends, co-workers and family.

By all means let people get extra entries if they promote you that way if you must -- just don't exclude the rest of us.

Some of us don't like using facebook, and others don't like using out facebook accounts to spam marketing "likes" at everyone we know; most of which we know don't share in most of our many diverse interests.

No one I know CARES that I like to read about blu-ray movie releases and home theater news. Really. And if they did, they could always find this web-site the same, super-easy way I did: Type "Blu-ray" and hit Control-Enter.

Thanks.

+1 I hate Facebook and will never use it and hate being excluded from contest's because of it. Blu-ray.com could still use Facebook and polls and just combine to two to get winners.

Agreed. This "like" business is as phoney as Joe College having 900 friends on the face books.

Open the contests up to everyone.

LOL. It's called generating traffic for the site, and if you want a shot at the "prize", you need to contribute something for it. Nothing in life is free.

Just wanted to thank Ken for his good PM communication on this issue.

I get that every business is compelled these days to seek every form of marketing opportunity they can, including Facebook.

I understand the reason for the contest likely being Facebook-only is to strongly encourage members who otherwise would just answer a poll for an entry to market blu-ray.com to their facebook friends.

I also don't "hate" facebook itself. I accept it for the tool that it is too keep tabs on the comings and goings of people in my afk life.

I'm just not big at all on "like" spam as a marketing tool. It seems invasive and annoying to me. For example, someone I know just "Liked" gillette razors. I'm guessing the company made them "Like" them to get a coupon. As a result, everyone they know just got spammed with the totally un-enlightening like.

I don't want to be that person. If I like something (like this web site), and I know a friend might enjoy it too, I just tell them about it and/or send them a link. Has always worked in the past.

But this is what facebook is becoming, unfortunately, so go ahead and get on board.

Just don't forget to throw a bone to those of us older folks who simply don't want to share so much of ourselves all the time.

True. But I've generated more traffic forwarding links (not to mention commissions from buying via affiliate links) than someone who just 'games the system' setting up a dummy facebook account simply to click on "likes" to enter contest or download coupons. The way facebook is expanding in the corporate sector, I would be surprised if a huge number of accounts out there aren't set up exactly for this purpose.

All of these giveaways should be on the forum, period. Just my two cents.

+1...I'm not a huge fan of Facebook either but I understand why the site implements the "like" feature. However, none of my friends have joined the forum because I selected "like"...

The Blue Valentine giveaway now includes a more inclusive Forum poll for members who do not wish to use Facebook. Future contests will rely on a combination of Facebook comments and Forum polls to ensure every member can enter giveaways. We plan to avoid using "Likes" as an entry method in the future as well; the points some of you made about spam notifications were taken to heart

I would like to also express my thanks to those of you who contacted us and explained your concerns about Facebook contests at length. Your helpful and insightful input, not the shaking fists of those who complained the loudest and angriest, is to thank for this issue being addressed.

The administrators at Blu-ray.com have always gone and will always go out of their way to listen to the input and feedback of our readers, so please keep that in mind when raising concerns in the future. Calm, collected members move mountains at Blu-ray.com

Thanks as always for posting, and good luck in all our exciting giveaways!

I'm just loving the fact that we are getting the opportunity to join in on some free stuff from the studios. And it's nice to see that more and more are available for our international members as well. Great job by all!

Is there any way to get rid of the Facebook stuff on the homepage? I don't use Facebook and it's a bit annoying seeing these "faces" on the homepage.

Disregard, I just figured it out.

Ah, glad you were able to figure it out. For everyone's benefit though: simply uncheck the "Display Facebook Plugins" box beneath "Third Party Sites" in your settings/personal site preferences. That should take care of it
