So who here has purchased this title? Looks like a decent flick and was a very blind buy for me. Any thoughts of reviews before I indulge in it tonight

A fantastic war movie. Emotional - frustrating at times to see what was actually happening to the Algerian soldiers (wait, doesn't the back cover say this too?). Don't go into it comparing it to saving Private Ryan though - the two are quite different. I don't want to offer you my complete critique of the movie, I'll wait until you see it to discuss it. But every soldier has his story...you'll come to admire some characters, and hate others...

From a video standpoint, it is solid - crisp, clear, about a 4.5 on the BR scale - minor layer of grain inherent, but it is no problem at all, since no one here really cares about grain in their movies anyway (). Black levels are solid and details of the landscapes and settings really come alive.

Audio - the DTS soundtrack, I think it maxes out at 1.5mbps, since there is no lossless on the track - dialogue comes in crisp and clear, and being a war movie, the gunshots and shells exploding ring true. I felt as if something was missing though - about a 4/4.5 - as solid as a lossy track could be - maybe you'll see what I mean when you watch it. But apart from a few scenes, the majority of the film is dialogue oriented, I noted very little in the surrounds outside of combat.

The extras are all in PAL 576 so I couldn't see them....I resisted the temptation to pick this up on DVD when I first noticed it back in January - eventually discovered there was a Metrodome UK release on Blu-ray - but the $40 import had me waiting for a bit, found a sealed new copy on eBay for $25 and snatched it up immediately!

...but a solid member of my collection! Loving all these foreign war film releases on Blu - anxiously awaiting Taegukgi on September 9th...

So this is region free I suppose?

Watched this at the Hawaii International Film Fest in 2006. Really enjoyed it.

Any other good region free BDs that are unavailable in the US (in the vein of this movie!) ?

Quote:
Based on a true story of heroism and sacrifice, SAINTS AND SOLDIERS was an acclaimed hit on the film festival circuit, winning over 10 best film awards around the country. In some of the most vicious days of World War II, four American soldiers survive a massacre of prisoners and remain trapped behind enemy lines. When they encounter a hiding British officer with valuable intelligence information, the group decides to try and sneak back into friendly territory with the data. However, that proposition is rife with difficulties: the group is mostly unarmed, the weather is freezing cold, they have no food, and the woodlands are crawling with German soldiers. Can each of the men overcome their fear and the odds to deliver the information that may save hundreds of Allied lives? SAINTS AND SOLDIERS is an independently made war film which proves that verisimilitude and emotional impact in the genre is not entirely the province of Hollywood.

I found Saints and Soldiers a mite too preachy, JB.

I just watched this today for the first time after receiving my large Amazon.co.uk order (including Downfall, Saints and Soldiers, Assembly, Katyn and Flame and Citron). Days of Glory was great, loved the subject matter. Gave me some knowledge of history I wasn't really aware of. Good visuals, good movie overall.

Actually this comes in a thick case. Katyn came in a Viva Elite case which was weird as Artificial Eye releases normally come in a thick case. Oh well you'll never know I guess.
