Perhaps this is the place for my small whine.

Beginning Sept. 18, I've plans to do my bit (since WB *claims* they are leaving it up to the consumer - we'll see because I don't trust their willingness to share and share alike i.e. they just may release some titles to HD DVD only). My "bit" consists of about 45 titles, many of which are Warner.

The hesitation I have is thier encodes - I just don't like what I've seen with VC1, I prefer what I've seen with AVC. Now I have a reasnable grasp of the differences however: they are based on MPEG2 - loop filter, block sizes differences for prediction, so that is not what I am interested in. VC1 just looks too 'pristine' (not really the correct word) for me. The 'texture' is such that it conveys the feeling of video (i.e. fixed raster/pixel) rather than the amorphous organic feel of film. Film by its very nature, being organic, is random, unlike video and I believe this 'nature' is conveyed at the least, on an semi-concious level. It is not simply a 24p/grain thing in my opinion. To me film looks more 'alive'. The AVC encodes (and MPEG2) just seem, to me, to retain this ineffable quality much better.

Airy-fairy stuff I know (and I must confess that is where I shine) but before anyone says "foof" - I used to do film (still have my own darkroom for still work), and have been involved in video/broadcast (mostly live) production in technical and non-techical capacities for more years than most of you whipppersnappers can count in birthdays.

Since we try to be serious herabouts - I am certainly *not* original with my thoughts, many of the aesthetic issues with respect to video vs. film have been explored by the structrualist film makers from the 60's and 70;s avant-garde - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structuralist_film_theory - and has been explored in detail by people such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_Lipton. So I talk through my hat but its been worn by others.

Anyway I guess no need to discuss, likely the only thing that would stop me from supporting the Warner 'buy' effort would be for them to not share equally with both formats (extras don't count). I've a feeing that should BD prevail with WB, that I will be purchasing again for those AVC encodes.

This information can be found elsewhere in the forum, but I'll post it here also for folks who may not be aware of this. This can stretch you Blu-ray dollars considerably.

At Warner's online site, you can use the Online Discount Code throught 9/30/07 to get 25% off their already low prices for many of their products. The code is RNFS.

This discount applies not only for Blu-rays already released, but also for a number of their releases which are currently pre-orders. For example, among my preorders are Blade Runner: Complete Collector's Edition (BD) for $22.46 and Deliverance (BD) for $14.96. The prices are unbelievably good and include a wide selection. I ordered 12 movies from the site last night. And cancelled some of my Amazon pre-orders. Where possible I prefer to buy directly from the studio.

http://whv.warnerbros.com/WHVPORTAL/...tleORCastCrew=

And when you click on "Add to Cart and over there add the Discount Code, the final lower price will appear. And for orders over $50 shipping is free. And, depending on what state you're in there is no sales tax (I'm in Maryland and there is no tax); sales tax apparently depends upon whether there's a Warners physical presence in your state.
