Default Astérix & Obélix Contre César

Astérix & Obélix contre César Blu-ray

Super excited about this. We are finally getting a restored Blu-ray release of Astérix & Obélix Contre César. It is reported to even have English subtitles. I was hoping with the new Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom (2023) they might have released them all in a special box set. I don't see anything about the other movies getting re-released though which is too bad. It looks like it currently available for per-order on Amazon.fr for a release date of September 27th. It also looks like it's limited to 3,000 printings. I better get my order in.

Just put in my order as well. Maybe they'll issue a box set later, either way I'm not missing out on this.

I’m enormously excited about this release. The live-action Asterix films have been abandoned on physical media for way too long.

The prospect about Mission Cleopatra getting a UHD release (with Atmos) is wonderful but I think it’s a massive disappointment that Pathé hasn’t done the same with the first one. Sure, I’m a bit biased because it’s a childhood favorite of mine but the logic here is baffling.

There are enough fans of these films to warrant an UHD, even Part III, but only doing the second one is very sad. Alain Chabat pushed for a full-on re-release whereas Claude Zidi probably wasn’t that insistent, if he supervised the new master at all.

I think Mission Cleopatra is more fondly remembered than Contre Cesar in France. It had that Canal Plus style humour that was popular with young people then and that generation is now nostalgic for it.

I prefer the first film. The second one is good and looks great (sets, locations, cinematography) but is more the Jamel Debbouze show with Asterix and Obelix as side characters at times. But it was the most popular of the films.

I did not know this, thanks for letting me know. I believe in Germany it was the other way around. Parts of Contre Cesar were even shot in the Bavaria studios in Munich. I live nearby and visited the remainders of the set which are now part of an exhibition together with the boat from Das Boot.

At this point a UHD would be most likely to emerge in Germany, hopefully from either Studiocanal or Plaion as they’ve proven quality most consistently.

Review in French with screen caps at the bottom. Looking good…

Just watched it tonight and the sound and picture quality were really great! So happy this is finally out with English Subs. One thing to note if you use masking for your screen you will need to leave the bottom masking off as the subs extend down into the black bars (which honestly I love when they do that). The picture looked like it was made this year. Can't wait to see what they do to Mission Cleopatra.

Looks great! Although it has that typical Hiventy yellow-green auto coloring..

No idea why Pathe didn't release this one in 4K, but I hope they end up doing it at some point. At least we got it on BD.

As a long-time Asterix fan in the States, I followed the progress of the film well before it was released back in 1999, and even have some really low-quality clips from it saved from back then. I've waited all this time to finally have a version with English subtitles and the film in very high quality...though not 4K for some reason, and missing the English dubbed track, which while not my preference, it would be nice to have it for completion's sake. Otherwise, this is a very fine release that I'm proud to own.

But I finally sat down and watched it the other night, and there's something odd I noticed: the film plays just fine on my Sony Blu-ray player, but if I try to choose one of the extras from the main menu, the menu briefly pauses, and then goes right back to playing as if nothing happened. I've tried various ways to access these extras, and all of them do the same thing. The only place the extras will play is on my computer.

Anybody else run into this issue?

I didn't have any issues but I used my region free player. If I have time I'll try it in one of my regular ones.

Extras might be 50Hz which your player might not handle.
