Same here,The Spirit of the Beehive is one of my 10 favorite films of all time,I never expected Erice to make another feature film again so this is exciting.
I was sort of hoping that some one would bring Close Your Eyes to cinemas in my country, there has been no news but who knows, it still might happen. |

12 April in UK cinemas. I could certainly do with rewatching Spirit of the Beehive and El Sur since I saw them as a double bill at University in the mid-1980s. The former is less available that the latter in the UK at the moment though.

Nice to see, I thought New Wave Films had given up on physical media.

They’re mostly relying on DVD only for Totem, My Imaginary Country, 1976, In Front of Your Face, What Do You See When We Look at the Sky?, Playground, The Audition, There is No Evil, It Must Be Heaven

The new film's run at the BFI Southbank coincides with an Erice retrospective, so I have the opportunity to see Beehive again without resorting to Youtube or the like. I've got the BFI Blu-ray so The South is covered. |

I guess this might be an indication of the dire state of the physical media market for contemporary arthouse films that they can't justify the cost of a blu ray release. But I do wonder whether another label might have taken the plunge. (As it is I'll be sourcing the ones I want from this list from overseas labels where i can, but I would have been only too happy to support NW had they gone for blu).

Also the majority of arthouse films are VOD only with distributors sitting on the physical media rights.
I can only speak from my own experience that I refuse to buy them on DVD (especially when they’re streaming in HD) but would definitely consider getting them on BD (some do have import options). But I think DVDs still make sense for libraries/institutional access. |
