Well since season three just got under way I thought that I'd open a thread up for disscusion about Shawn and Gus and there dectective front. And I've also added a poll so you can vote which observation crime detective show you enjoy the most. Please try to keep disscusion of the other two shows I list to a minimal, this is a Psych thread.

There is a type of show that has been dragging itself across the TV screens ever since "Seinfeld".
It may be an overt "comedy" like Seinfeld, or Everybody Loves Raymond, or whatever; or it could be Psych, or the other two snoozers. These shows are cheap productions - sometimes pitifully cheap - clearly written by third tier writers, sitting around a conference table, trying to impress each other with contemptuous jabs. Their primary skill lies in puncturing cliched characters of their own cunning design. It's just product, designed to fill a time slot, with recognizable characters so viewers can safely scoot into their cushions just before they hear somebody "get off a good one" at a predictable plot juncture. It's about as creative as a McDonald's menu. Situation comedy is completely dead on television; and "comedy-drama" is simply the hour long zombie that dug itself from the burial mound, launching zingers at equally inert targets. If you look carefully at its head, tucked neatly under its arm, you will notice that each zinger is accompanied by a perfectly timed raised eyebrow. Or, in the case of Psych, perhaps two. |

I prefer "The Closer", which has such an intermittent production schedule it's almost impossible to enjoy. It's one of the best series on television, but is obviously pretty expensive to produce, and most shows have a high quality of writing that can't be just ground out like hamburger. I can see why people like "Psych" - it's intermittently good enough to watch if you have a loose hour just hanging around - but I have a low opinion of writing teams that take their audiences for granted. Glad to hear it's tightened up this season, maybe I'll climb down off my high horse and give it another shot. |

I will likely check it out on DVD. I do like Simon Baker. And I disagree with the writing comment above on Psych. I know it is not the most well written show, but it is just for entertainment and comedy. I do not think it is as horribly written and the above poster made it out to be. We are all entitled to our opinions however and I can see how some people might not like Psych.
