Default Quick HDD question - please help

So my 60gb PS3 is about out of room. I borrowed my friends MLB The Show and there wasn't even enough room to do the install for the game. I had been thinking about buying a new HDD for it, but as (un)luck would have it, my laptop died a while back and I finally got it looked at - a cracked mother board, so shes history.

The laptop however has a 320gb HDD. Is it possible for me to swap this one to the PS3? Would the PS3 automatically wipe/format it to the correct format?

Please let me know, at the very least this would be a nice way for me to upgrade my hard drive on the cheap. Anything else I'd need to look out for?

It should fit nicely. Go over to ifixit.com for a quick run down on the process.

In case anyone needs to swap out a drive.........

The only thing to be careful with is that Sony has tended to over-tighten the four screws which secure the HDD in the mounting tray, so make sure you have the right screwdrivers for the job. I've actually had to use a small pliers to get those bastards turning

Well I had a ton of trouble with all the screws, but some elbow grease and needle nose pliers took care of them lol. Got the drives swapped and now it's restoring, but oh my is it going slow. Over an hour in and it STILL isn't even to 50% yet.

I just erased a lot of crap on the hard drive on my 60gig fatty. A lot of game info was holding onto space and I couldn't even download a demo. Deleting old game info freed up a whack of space.

Backup your current PS3 to an external drive.
Swap the drive and once you finish the OS installation.
Restore from the external drive.
I did that and no issues and I retained all my downloads and game data.

I've changed a few PS3 drives, and it's a common occurrence. Oftentimes, they have those screws in so tight that the tray itself is bent.

I believe that backup data gets encrypted, so yeah, it takes a while.

A key think you should check is to see what RPM speed is on that hard drive that is coming from your laptop.

If it's a a 7200 RPM laptop hard drive you can try it but I wouldn't risk it because I have heard the older fat PS3 models have heat issues with 7200 RPM laptop hard drives.

The 2 times I upgraded the internal hard drive on my orginal PS3 60GB and PS3 Slim 160GB. I have bought and upgraded with 5400 RPM laptop hard drives.
