Question PS3 Won't Output 5.1 Surround When Playing Movies

I need help!
My "fat" PS3 doesn't have 5.1 Surround when playing "disc based" movies, the PS3 games and Netflix work fine...but DVD's and Blu-Ray only play two channels! WHATS WRONG?!

I'm using HDMI cables and have the settings on my PS3 set for 5.1 compatibility.

At least you are getting some audio. I remember my Ps2 quit playing optical audio all together. SOunds like you just need to adjust the settings. I actually use both audio outputs for the TV and my stereo.

I had this problem when my other player died, and I temporarily moved the PS3 to the HT...... I had it connected to a T.V./3.0 setup for so long, I forgot about the settings....

You said you had it set to 5.1, but just to be safe, I'd go into the audio-settings, set it to HDMI, and "Auto" for the audio codec-settings, and see what it does after that.....

what receiver are you using?

was it playing 5.1 before, and all of a sudden stopped? Or did you just get a new setup and perhaps some settings are incorrect??

It's a Yamaha HTR-8540, I got it like 6 years ago if I remember correctly.

It switches to 5.1 only for Netflix and PS3 games. My PS3 for some dumb reason it doesn't even let me change the audio output settings. All I can get is PCM audio and it never saves the manual settings.

The audio runs through my TV then to the receiver, maybe that's the problem? Some of my LaserDisc sound better than the DVD/Blu-Ray versions.

Thats exactly your problem.

Run your Optical cable directly from the PS3 to the Receiver first.

(does your receiver accept HDMI or no? I could not find any info from the net)

No, I don't believe it accepts HDMI. And my only Optical Cable is being used by my LaserDisc player.

so how do you have audio going from the TV to the Receiver?? red/white analog cable?

that is only two channel (2.0 stereo), so never can be 5.1

You need an Optical cable or HDMI cable for true 5.1 audio.

if you need an optical cable, check here:

All you have to do is hook up an optical cable and you should be set to go.

I fixed it! Had to move speakers and my PS3 but I hooked it up!
Now I need to get a new receiver and another cable, the receiver only has one input.

You're saying LaserDisc players were only capable of 2.0 audio?

I finally got a TV this month with HDMI, but since I just bought the TV, I decided to wait a bit before buying a new receiver. The receiver is a few years old and it only has one optical input. What I did (until I can upgrade to a new receiver) is purchase an optical cable splitter from Amazon. I have the optical cables from my PS3, BD player and HD DVD player going into the splitter and the splitter going into the receiver. The splitter has a dial on it that lets me switch devices. It's not lossless but it works pretty well.

Yes, an optical cable switcher will work well too.

Optical Toslink 3 Input Selector Switch

No, I mean red/white analog from your TV is only capable of 2.0 stereo.

...which is what I assumed you have connected from the TV to Receiver for your audio.

My PS3 is not playing surround sound through my receiver. It used to, but after being turned off for a month, it won't do it no matter what settings I change. It only plays in stereo.

My setup:

Denon AVR-591 receiver
PS3 160gb
Running HDMI from the PS3 to the Denon receiver.

As I said, it worked perfectly in the past without me making any changes. It all worked automatically. I have tried making some changes listed in this thread, such as switching from LPCM to Bitstream and vice versa. I've tried setting the audio to HDMI auto and manual both, but nothing works. LPCM 2 channel stereo options are selected and grayed out, so I can't deselect them.

I have tried a different HDMI cable and several different blu-ray discs. My Dish Network box and Apple TV 2 both play surround sound thru the receiver just fine.

I'm frustrated and stuck. Any ideas?

Is it possibly a setting on the receiver? Having the PS3 off for months wouldn't change any settings. When you use the auto set up with the PS3, what all does it select for audio formats?

Auto setup on the PS3 selects just about everything. If I remember correctly, my receiver displayed Dolby DTS when playing blu-rays in the past. I messed around with some settings on the receiver, and it now displays Multi In, and all speakers are being used now, but I know that was not what it displayed in the past. The default PS3 settings worked perfectly before.

As stated before, other sources play Dolby surround just fine, so I'm not sure what's different when the PS3 is being used.

Your receiver is now saying "MULTI IN" because you must have set your PS3 to LinearPCM instead of bitstream now (like you sort of mentioned). That is the only difference. On paper, all you would have to do is change the audio to bit-stream on the PS3/receiver and you will start to see the DTS/DD logo's show on the AVR again, but its just a preference. It'll be the same audio either way.

That looks like a HTiB system briancrowe? If it resembles what I found online, you need to connect the white/red composite cables to the AUX input on your system. Then run the audio setup for the PS3 and it should do the rest. Your PS3 will (hopefully) output stereo audio to your HTiB system, and then the HTiB will process the signal to surround using DDPrologic or something. That is the best setup you can get with your current gear.

Hope that helps you guys.
