I get that they want to encourage diversity, but I don't get why they can't create new characters rather than futzing with the ones that have been how they've been for decades. I suppose that would take actual creativity to draw people to the character, rather than a gimmick.

Marvel sure didn't leave any of the major ethnic groups feeling left out, making him a half-black, half-hispanic teenager. I am surprised they didn't throw in a little Asian background to complete the mix. These moves are strictly made in mind for the media licensing potential to other forms of entertainment, like television. Demographically, the typical comic book reader at the moment is a white male in their 20s to 40s who grew up with the industry.
Marvel now goes from one publicity stunt to the next very quickly, hoping to garner mainstream media attention. Even DC is guilty of it lately, as the print industry is dying and the big comic book companies are resorting to all sorts of crazy stunts in hopes of delaying the inevitable death knell of the medium. |

I realized that this is a big issue when NY1 did a segment on it on tv LINK. Personally, I don't have a issue with it since it takes place in the ultimate universe and not in the main Marvel universe. My wonder is how does Miles get his spider powers and what new powers does he have.

Anyone willing to bet that Peter will be brought back from the dead (like how they did with the Amazing Spider-man when he died and when he accepted the power got new powers like internal webbing and the ability to shoot stingers)?

edit: now it is more believable that we went to the same High School. I think this Spider-Man is for the Silicon Valley. Without Al Sharpton these advancements in comics couldn't have been possible. Bring on the the Chinese Canadian Thor next. Last edited by Monkey; 08-04-2011 at 09:14 PM. |

That is exactly correct. You are going to start seeing a lot of comics coming out of Marvel made expressly with the purpose of licensing the character to films. This character was designed for no other reason.

The issue I have with this is that he's mixed. I mean, I'm not saying that's a bad thing but it seems to cause more issue than it creates. So you have a character of color, but why do they have to be "something else to"? I mean, if he's gay like rumored then I'm definately not going to read this just because it feels like he's a "liberal" figurehead.
Quite honestly, they just need to make a black character own his own standing, instead fo being put in a place already fitted for another character. Static shock and Blade, for example, are great characters. The main issue with most minority superheroes is that they tend to ooze the race their supposed to be in a stereotypical way. They can't just go to high school, but a ghetto one. Or they have to be something, like, Black Panther. Seriously Marvel, do it right or not at all. |
