Default AMD: "Xbox 720 graphics will look like Avatar"

Yeah okay...

Quote:
Technology company AMD, who supplied the graphics hardware for the Xbox 360, claims that the next Xbox will be capable of the level of graphical detail seen in James Cameron's movie Avatar. Even on PC, that kind of technology just isn't here yet, but AMD claims the Xbox 720 will launch with it.

While AMD would not confirm they were actually working on the 360's successor, director of ISV relationships at AMD, Neal Robison, stated that gamers have a lot to excited about.

Robison also mentioned that the A.I. and physics capabilities of the next-gen hardware will allow for every pedestrian in a game such as Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row to have a totally individual mentality, meaning when you shoot a gun or run someone over they don't all just do the same thing. There will be no more mob mentality, where everyone just screams and runs away; every NPC will actually be an individual character.
I say good luck with that.

lol, hasn't every video game console from the beginning of the industry overstated their graphical abilities?

I remember seeing the tech demo for the NEXT GEN Madden in 05 and my jaw dropped. Then, I got Madden 06 and proceeded to cry myself to sleep.

Just give me a console that can output all games at 1080p 60fps. Oh and full 3D capabilities.

Agreed, this should be the new standard.

Just like how Sony was bragging that the PS2 would get Toy Story quality graphics. Never happened.

No, no, no, no, NO!

That AMD guy must live near a glue factory if the thinks a games console is going to offer in-game graphics that took SFX industry build computers something like a year to render.

We see this kind of hype every time a new console gets rumoured. All we'll get next time round is, as suggested above, a new minimum spec along the lines of 1080p 60fps, etc, etc

4k? Who the hell needs that! 1080p is the standard for the home and it will be for a long time yet.

I can't ever see a time when consoles or a PC will ever match the effects seen in films; the studios throw money at custom built machines to render their graphics better and faster, so how the hell is a console going to match that in realtime?

Someone send this guy on a holiday, he needs one!

I'm 40 years old and I have lived through every console launch since the 16 bit era. This hype is such bull-$hit. I wish these companies would just STFU and release the specs. Let the games and the people decide for THEMSELVES how good the games look. And for god's sake, stop promoting titles with pre-rendered, cut scene footage! Show us what the @#!&-ing game looks like WHILE YOU ARE PLAYING IT (I'm looking at you Madden and Gran Turismo). Stop treating your audience like a bunch of dumbasses!

That was my very first thought! The currrent gen lauded Pixar quality graphics (I couldn't remember if it was Sony or MS).

Some games this gen have that. Uncharted 2 and GT5 have it in 7.1. I know MGS4 has 7.1 but am not sure if it's LPCM. Although I don't think DD could handle 7.1. And there's more. I'm just not sure which games. KZ 2 and 3? I guess you're just wanting it standard? Not a bad idea.

There's so much wrong with Neal Robison's proclamation, I don't know where to begin. Seeing as none of his assertions can be validated with existing hardware, there's no reason to believe that he can even come anywhere close to delivering on such a claim. We know it can't, but even if it could, rendering and animating such objects would require so many artists and man-hours that it wouldn't be cost-effective.

I like AMD (a lot, actually), but they need to keep a tighter rein on their spokespeople. I just wished SONY would ditch Nvidia for AMD with their next console though.

Haha, love the quotes on capabilities. Do hope they have quite a jump in abilities though.

agreed 100% plus bullshots, photo mode, replay mode (car games especially), high res garage pictures versus gameplay, etc

edit: Of course I'm open to reading quote from Ken Kutaragi as well, if one actually exists

"One of the basic premises of the Xbox is to put the power in the hands of the artist," Blackley (Seamus Blackley, head of Microsoft's Xbox division) said, which is why Xbox developers "are achieving a level of visual detail you really get in 'Toy Story."

Gates said the 3-D chips in the Xbox would be three times faster than anything on the market and offer nearly unlimited graphical visuals. "We're approaching the level of detail seen in Toy Story 2," he said, referring to the computer-generated kids film from Disney/Pixar.

"Game developers will finally be able to develop games as they can visualize it in their minds, without having restrictions placed on them due to performance."
