Default Where's 20th Century Fox and Star Wars?!

It was recently pointed out by AV Integrated in a reply that there some other big names missed not in the so-called "big 8" companies, notably Warner, Disney and Fox. The latter got me thinking - Fox released some of the biggest movies of all time, namely the original Star Wars trilogy and the more recent prequel films. All of which George Lucas has been on record as stating will be re-issued imminently on HD. (There is a popular demand issue of the pre-special edition original trilogy later this year on DVD supposedly both the HD release happens.) Does anyone know when Fox and the other companies will be joining the HD party? Oh and most importantly will it be on HD-DVD, Blu-ray or both?!

Disney and Fox will be exclusively Blu-ray, so you can expect movies from them sometime soon. I would suspect both are waiting for more hardware to be available for Blu-ray before releasing.

As far as Warner goes, it'll be releasing movies on both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

If I was a betting man, Fox, Disney, and Warner will probably making a spash right around the same time the PS3 does, just in time for holiday season.

Don't hold your breath for the unaltered original trilogy on HD, though.

It wouldn't surprise me if George waits as long as he did to put SW out on DVD.

Agreed. These movies won't be out in HD for a long time.

I tell you:

If either format wants to put themselves over the top early...someone needs to make a sweetheart deal, because it's shock and awe time the day these come out in full HD glory.

That's what we gamers call a "system seller."

If BD or HD pulled any version of Star Wars out of its hat, the war would be over.

I agree with both of you but I don't think it's going to happen soon... maybe this fall if we're lucky.

I sure won't! I meant to say "before HD comes out". The theory seems to go that George is getting these much requested unaltered trilogy releases out on DVD now BEFORE any HD releases so that he doesn't have to release them again later on HD! Supposedly they are going to be based on 1993 masters and he has stated the original unaltered movies on film no longer exist. Am I the only one who finds this statement a bit hard to believe given they are all in the top 10 films of all time?! Given the huge capacity of Blu-ray, and dare I say it HD-DVD too, I can see no reason why we couldn't have all THREE current versions of the films in HD. (He changed them between the 1997 theatre special editions and the DVD releases.) Anyway like the sap I am I will be buying Star Wars all over again! Han shoots first, yes!!!

may 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Star Wars, now Lucasfilm must have something special up their sleeves to mark this.

Safe money would suggest a 6 movie boxset on DVD with extras not seen on any previous release (there is also solid news that Ep I & II have both had special effects improvements since their theatrical and DVD release)

Longer odds might see the same box set released on blu-ray. Although, knowing Lucasfilm, surely they would maximise their income by releasing each movie separately, then putting them together on a later boxset release.

Anyway, as long as it's blu-ray I'm happy.

I too expect something massive from Lucasfilm in 07. They have already announced they will release all six Star Wars films in IMAX 3-D starting with Phantom Menace.
