Default Dog Day Afternoon audio problem on PS3? Ooops, never mind :D - Gilda Radner

Dog Day Afternoon on PS3 60GB (firmware v2.10), via component video & optical audio.

I know this movie only has mono (DD 1.0), but I have a serious audio problem--there is no English dialog on my disc! I'm only hearing background sounds & music when I have it set to English. But choosing French or Spanish or English 4 (directors commentary), I can hear the voice just fine, no problem.

I tried switching between PCM / bitstream via PS3 settings, same results.

I even tried using the stereo analog cables instead of optical, same results.

I don't know anyone else with a Blu-ray player that I can try... maybe I should take the disc to Circuit City or something & see if they can try it? I don't have any issues with any of my other 50 Blu-ray discs or hundreds of DVDs through the PS3.

Does anyone else have this disc & a PS3, who can test it for me with both optical and HDMI and let me know if either way works fine? Could they have a batch of bad discs, or maybe it only works properly with HDMI?

That sucks. I don't even know how that'd be possible considering it's only one channel. This is going to sound like a dumb question, but I just have to ask it and don't think I am trying to put you down or anything. But are you actually watching a scene with dialogue? That's litterally the only thing I could come up with unless there's some weird setting on your reciever. By the way, what kind of reciever are you using and how is it hooked up?

i watched that the other day on my ps3 with optical and it worked fine, i don't have an HDMi receiver so I can't help you out on that end. I don't know if this would really make a difference, but I have the video output as HDMi to my tv. I don't know how that would make a difference though.

That's weird. Back when I watched it on my 60 gig PS3, I had an older version of the firmware and was running optical (now I'm running HDMI) but the audio was fine. Maybe a handshake issue with your receiver?

Yup -- the people's mouths move, but no words. Switch it to French or Spanish, there's the dialog. I tried everything imaginable.

The pre/pro is a NAD s170i, connected to the PS3 via optical -- but as I said, I tried it even with the analog cables from the PS3 and it does the same thing!

Based on broganreynik's reply, it looks like I need to call Warner to get a new disc...

I thought that originally also, that's why I tried the analog cables. Sounds like I have a freaky no-English dialog disc. With 2 others not having an issue from the PS3, that's the only explanation left.

Man, that is the weirdest thing I've heard in a while.

I have the Blu-Ray of DDA and it works fine on my PS3. This might seem a bit daft, but it's worth asking the question:

For the first few minutes of the movie there is no dialogue in the audio, just background noise. The camera follows Pacino et al as they speak, but no speech is heard until they're inside the bank. It's possible that in foreign language dubbed versions they have dropped in dialogue that isn't in the English version.

The reason I point this out is that Dog Day Afternoon was the first DVD I got years ago with my first player, and I thought there was a problem because the dialogue seemed to be missing.

As it's a mono track, it's not like there's an additional layer of audio that's missing, as could happen with a 5.1 mix. If you can hear background noise, then the audio track is there. It would be very, very strange for one (or even a batch) of discs to slip through with missing dialogue when there's only one audio track to start with. Did you hear the Elton John song over the montage sequence at the start?

Failing that, yep, get on the blower to Warner.

Good point Charvel2!

I heard music during the opening montage, but there was no voice in the music, just music. Is that how it should be?

And I only got to that first car scene. After expecting to hear dialog when they're talking in the car, that's when I started trying to figure out the problem.

So I haven't watched it past that point. When I get home tonight, I'll try playing further.

Hopefully that may be the whole problem!

Did it ever work for you? I was thinking of buying this yesterday and now a little sceptical ... is the PQ any good? anyone?

The PQ is surprisingly good, and vastly superior to the DVD version (at least the R2 DVD that I have). Bearing in mind the movie is 30 years old, it'll never be reference quality, but it's about as good as this great film will ever look. If you don't already own it on DVD, definitely buy it. If you do have it on DVD, it's still well worth considering on Blu given the step up in PQ.

There's a review in this site's reviews list that's well worth a read.

Default Audio Problem

We had a similar problem after the upgrade. We solved it by changing the Keytone setting (under Audio, i believe - I'm at work). When the Keytone was one way, we had music and background noise but no dialog, but set another way the dialog was there as well. I can't remember if it is "on" or "off" that fixed the problem - and I have no idea why this should be an adjustable setting .

Smile Good news!

Turns out the problem was no problem at all. I let the movie keep playing, and sure enough, shortly after they got into the bank, there was dialog!

Weird how there was French and Spanish outside, at the car scene, but no English. Oh well. Oh, and I tried that keytone setting, but it didn't change anything except the keytone.

Thanks everyone! Keep it Blu!

Sorry for the bump, but I'm wondering, is it actually even possible for a disc to be made missing an entire channel of audio? Isn't that almost like all of the blue colours missing from the picture?
