But what about picture quality, are these both pretty similar?

I noticed the panny has 3,000,000: 1 ratio and the samsung is 200,000:1

Also the panny has internet capable

I don't know much about that Samsung, but going bigger is not always better if you are going to compromise PQ. The ST30 seems to be getting good reviews so far. Plus it's only 4", not like 10" or anything.

My vote is the Panny since I don't know much about the Samsung. Do some googling and see if you can dig out some reviews or info on the Samsung though.

Inflated contrast rations can

It depends. I'd wait for reviews then judge. Panasonic isn't bad though, excellent rather. But it's still not a Kuro

...yet

Hey buddy, how's it goin'? I would prob go with the Panny; better reputation, reviews, etc., from what I've read/researched in the past. I have a 50" Samsung (but its just a DLP), & when I can (f-time job), I plan on getting a 60-65" Panny plasma. In fact, I already have a couple in my Amazon cart for "that day".

What size are you going up from? Good luck bud.

** Edit: Just saw you have a 65" Toshiba. So, going Down to the 55" Panny vice the 59" (weird size, huh?) Samsung could be tough. Unless the 65" is a DLP with an inferior picture. **

I might have a biased opinion since I do have a Samsung plasma, but I saw the ST30 in the store & both my friend & I's exact words were 'this picture looks like garbage.' We ventured over to the d550 and d650, and the picture was amazing. If the entry level plasmas have that great of a picture quality I really can't wait to see the d7000 & d8000 - I might have to be making an upgrade.

Just like last years Panny S2, which I had for a day & took it back for the Sammy because the S2's PQ was gross.. I do not like the ST30.

Not only do I think the Samsung has a much superior PQ, but it is also bigger. This is a no brainer in my opinion.

Just my opinion - it looks like there are quite a few Panny fans on this thread, so choose wisely.

I will say they are both nice plasmas. I own Panasonic's and think they have excellent PQ. Going to a store a viewing TV's is tough because of all the different settings one can encounter and also the good old "Torch Mode" to make the display POP in poor and unnatural lighting. The real test is in your viewing room where one can set the proper settings. I have seen terrible PQ in both Samsung and Panasonic plasmas but have also seen the same sets in ideal conditions were they look excellent. Another thing that makes it tough is looking at 50 or more TV's in a showroom as your eyes can not acclimate that quick to any TV. I just recommend doing alot of research and once you make a choice, take the TV home so you can get a real feel on how it looks in your room. Give it a week and if you don't like it, return it. In the end, only one thing can decide and judge what's best, your eyes

I agree, if you buy from a dealer that has a good warranty like Best Buy you can just return it if you aren't happy with it.

I think pq would be close to the same with the panny being slightly better. Not sure it would be noticeable unless in a dark room.

LOL that will never happen I just tell her that i have to buy more expensive equipment because of the way she will only let me setup the speakers

I can make cheap speakers sound better if you let me take those plants away and space them out. I cant move the trees so i just buy more expensive speakers!!

Wow, are you sure the settings and cables were the same between both tv's? I sell tv's and have both the 59" D550 and 55" ST30 in stock and already the ST30 is our stores number 1 seller. In fact, we have yet to sell the samsung D550 in either the 50" or 59" sizes. I had a customer pay $700 more for the gt30 because they liked the ST so much more than the samsung, but we didn't have it in a 50" so they payed for the gt as if they were down grading that much going w/ the D550.

The ambient light filter (louvre filter?) is so much better on the panny so it handles high light better and can maintain deep blacks without washing out in bright areas. Plus it offers the motion smoothing technology like 120/240hz lcds offer to artificially increase the frame rate of the video if you like that effect and it even does it in 3D as well.

It's no question that i and all my other associates would buy the St30. Wont be the best picture, but will easily be the best buy of 2011 and for sure out rating the D550.
