Default Casablanca stand-alone vs. Ultimate Collectors?

Casablanca stand-alone vs. Ultimate Collectors Blu... what's the difference?

I have the Ultimate Edition but it takes up WAY to much space. I don't need movie cards, wallets, and all that crap. I just want the movie.

Does the stand-alone version contain the same movie + extras? I noticed I can't even get it on Amazon. Best Buy lists it was Fullscreen when one of the DVD's says Widescreen. Is this actually true?

Can someone break down the differences for me?

Thanks,

Ethan

I'm almost positive the stand alone is the same disc(s?)/special features as the Ultimate Edition, just without all the physical extras and fancy packaging.

Also...as I've tried to make known in various other threads, Wherehouse.com is currently selling it for $20 (edit: price apparently raised to $23), and if you find 2+ other pre-orders on their site (most of their pre-orders are comparable or sometimes even cheaper than Amazon) to bring your order over $50, you can get 20% off your entire order plus free shipping, bringing the movie down to (edit: now $18.50ish)

I guess they raised it since I ordered a few days ago (haven't looked since, just based my post solely on my order...it was 20.29), sorry about that . In that case, you would get it for $18.50ish after the promo. Still not too shabby based on everyone else's prices You choice though

I agree that it will be the same exact disc minus the trinkets. As for the aspect ratio I rented this from Netflix several months ago and it was full screen but still looked great.

But what if you find yourself in Casablanca and can't get out? At least I have my letter of transit signed by de Gaulle! It cannot be rescinded!

So there is no Widescreen Blu-ray version? Is the DVD widescreen just cropped that way? Or is there actually a Widescreen version of Casablanca?

No widescreen, not even on DVD.

For those that have the collectors edition - did it come with an extra dvd with a doco on Jack Warner?

And is that on the standard edition???

No widescreen because this movie was not shot in widescreen, so the DVDs and Bluray accurately match the movie's intended aspect ratio.

That's right. The documentary Jack L Warner: The Last Mogul is included in the collector's edition on a second SD DVD (not a second BD). This second DVD is not included in the new single-disc edition (and the documentary is not included on the BD).

Casablanca was released in 1942. Widescreen didn’t come into vogue until the 1950s, primarily to distinguish films from the upstart medium of television. There had been a few experiments with widescreen before then, but those films aside, the non-widescreen 1.37:1 ratio was the standard until the 1950s.

It's the anti-fluff edition. Just the disk which is the same transfer/features that the UCE came with.

When Casablanca was made, nearly all movies were shot in the aspect ratio we now call "full screen." Widescreen movies prior to the mid-1950s were a rarity, though a few DO exist.
