United Kingdom Andrew Haigh's Weekend Review

Weekend Blu-ray

Weekend Blu-ray Review

I'm wondering if anyone in the UK has received the BD of this film yet, and can verify whether it's region-free. I really hope so.

I'm surprised barely anyone talks about this title.... I'd probably buy it (eventually) whatever the region coding is...as I doubt the chances of the US getting this on BD.

I've pre-ordered the UK blu-ray. When it arrives I'll switch my player to region 1 and see if it's region locked.
That's Godard's Week End (1967) you're mixing up with this.

Now that this has been released in the UK, I hope someone can determine whether it's region free.

I do want to get this, but as there are so many other titles out, I have postponed this for a while

According to the Moviemail website it is Region B

I normally try the Tesco Entertainment website where they sometimes have a picture of the back of the case, or hope someone has put a picture up on Amazon, but no luck in either of these cases

Peccadillo Pictures' Blu ray titles seem to be Region Free. I bought one for myself since I have a Multi Region Player, but I also bought one for a friend who only has a Region A player. So I am hoping. My order is still on route from the U.K. and shuold arrive later this week or Monday latest.

I've just tried it with my player set to region A and it's region free.

And it's a slim (US style) amaray too. Love the slip artwork - especially the fact that the cover image stretches round the spines.

Watched this last night. Beautiful and touching film. The artwork (both case and slipcover) is indeed great, maybe one of the best looking ones in my collection

Where can I buy this from? It seems it will never get released in the US so I may as well import it.

Default The Weekend - how to grade such a film

I had not realised until reading the review that this is an explicit gay film. That is Ok as far as it goes but gay and lesbian material will not suit many tastes and I was wondering if it might be appropriate to have some special grading to alert customers who might feel influenced to view / buy it or not depending on their taste. Speaking personally I would never buy such a film but others will want it and should be alerted to this opportunity. I would not want to buy it on spec, as I often do with well reviewed movies, and then have to throw it out on personal grounds.

Do you actually read any of the reviews before you buy the disc? It seems to me that would alert you to the subject matter without a need for any "special grading."

Or was this just an excuse to share your personal beliefs with the forum?

My thoughts exactly. If you can't take the time to educate yourself about what you're buying, then that's your problem. A "special grading" for a gay film would just be blatant homophobia.

What about other highly regarded and critical acclaimed films like 'A Single Man', 'Brokeback Mountain' and 'Maurice'? I see you have several Merchant Ivory and Ang Lee films in your collection, filmmakers whose "gay" films explore very similar themes to the rest of their oeuvre. For example 'Brokeback Mountain' and 'Lust, Caution' compliment each other beautifully. It seems a bit limiting to deny oneself from experiencing genuinely good films just because they have gay characters in them.

I guess they should have a special grading for "straight movies" too. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Read the plot and you'll know what it's about. I do feel very sad for someone who wants to miss out on great films just because they have gay characters. Maybe you should watch them and get educated.
