Warner Bros The Wild Bunch (directed by Mel Gibson)

Mel Gibson has been set by Warner Bros to direct The Wild Bunch, a new version of the 1969 Sam Peckinpah-directed classic Western. Gibson is writing the script with Bryan Bagby. Gibson will be executive producer. SOURCE

Mel is a pretty good director. But there is no reason to remake this.

It's one of my favorite films of all time, so iffy about remaking it. But if Gibson directs and they keep it period (I know a contemporary remake was discussed years ago), I see myself getting excited for it.

More Mel Gibson directed movies are always a good thing.

Although I'd rather see Gibson's no-holds-barred directorial traits put to use in something other than a remake (such as the already legendary viking project), I have no reverence for Peckinpah's classic (sue me!) and the prospect of him tackling a ultra-violent western is too enticing to just shrug off.

Fortunately, though, Destroyer comes first.

this could be amazing with Gibson's obvious directorial talent.... however the script and the cast will have something to do with it's success as well...

Love Mel as a director, but there's no point to this. Do the damn Viking movie instead of remaking a masterpiece that is 100% a Sam Peckinpah film.

I'd say the closest we got to Bersker was with The Revenant a couple years back but as much as I'm for seeing Mel make more movies, I'd want him to do that instead of this.

To me, The Revenant reminded me of the kind of film Gibson would have made: A historical epic/revenge story with an extreme amount of violence. On top of that, DiCaprio was originally supposed to be in Berserker before it fell through. So that's how I saw The Revenant being about the closest to that.

If this ends up with a 4K UHD of Peckinpah's movie getting released as a cash-in then I'm all for it!

Though they could just release one next year as a tie in to the 50th anniversary (amazing how modern the film feels given its age) and that would come sooner than a remake would hit theaters.

Gibson is an interesting choice, given that his love for blood and gore rivals Peckinpah’s. But the Wild Bunch is such a timeless classic of its era that a modern remake would be very difficult to pull off. I mean, it might work. It might also fail spectacularly. My bet is that it will turn out to be moderately well-made but utterly uninmaginative, derivative and with a poor story but excellent gunfights.

I've actually been wanting Gibson to direct a Western, so that's pretty cool news. But I am concerned this will push back Resurrection.

I'd never want to see a remake of this film, but if anyone would be perfect to direct, it would be Mel Gibson

Ok, my personal feelings on Gibson aside, what is the point? The original was a groundbreaking bookmark in cinema, alongside Bonnie and Clyde, showcasing violence that had never been seen before at that point. These days, it’s still effective and only “tamed” to those truly desentized by movie violence. All Gibson will do is restrain from any kind of subtlety and just go for exploitation violence. And even if you are willing to do this, why him? The films he’s done, I’ve seen done better. Braveheart, Passion, Hacksaw? Gladiator, Last Temptation, and Silence. Why not get someone who could at least try a more unique spin on this? WB, you’ve really lost some points to me.

Silence kicks the piss out of Hacksaw Ridge, I agree. But Gladiator better than Braveheart? Last Temptation better than Passion?!
