Great film. Hopefully it gets a blu-ray release here in the states.

I'm kind of on the fence with this one. The numerous line-readings of the play and ruminations on "essence" of the characters were awfully forced and more than a bit tedious. However, Binoche and Stewart gave solid performances and tried their best to make them seem natural.

FYI...The views of the alps are absolutely stunning.

can't speak about a bluray release - but the film IS getting a US theatrical run early next year.

It's an impressive film.

5/5.

This film hit me like a ton of bricks? Like I literally don't know how but I watched it tonight finally and I have to say, this is such an immense, strong film.

I literally thought the praise for Kristen Stewart was too much, and as the film started I didn't see anything special with it but as it progressed, and that final scene between the director and Maria, I realized, Kristen really did steal the film. I found myself in tears in that final moment.
[Show spoiler]Her sheer presence in that scene without even being in it, it was magnanimous. Combined with Maria's face changing as the film closed, she realized what Valentine wanted for her and how Valentine affected her.

The moment Valentine left, I realized that she saw what her situation was. It mirrored the play that Maria was made famous in and was reprising. Valentine didn't want to be Sigrid to Maria's Helena and she had to disappear without notice.

I also played with that idea that Valentine was nothing but a figment of Maria's imagination and that it mirrored the play again, Helena and Sigrid are the same person essentially and part of me thinks Valentine was a representation of younger Maria, a wiser younger Maria.

Juliette Binoche was just perfection. She brought so much power to Maria and the performance was so multi-layered.

Chloe Moretz did nothing for me until the scene where she finally meets Maria for drinks. She says to Maria, "I find it incredibly brave of you that you're taking the role of Helena. It's a way of dealing with time." Jo-Ann is essentially a Lindsay Lohan tribute but I found Chloe to be vulnerable in that scene and almost, like looking at the kind of actress she wants to be.

I'm gonna have to import this on Bluray. I think this may have trumped Room for me as my favorite film of 2015.
