Default Can I connect Bose 901's to a Pioneer SC-55?

I am getting ready to buy a new receiver after having the old one for almost 17 years. I was wondering if I will be able to connect my 901's to a Pioneer Elite SC-55. Thanks for any input.

I have a pair of Bose 901 speakers and have connected them to different receivers and amplifiers over the years with no problems. They have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and the manufacturer recommends an amplifier rated 10 watts to 450 watts. In a stereo setup, it is best to use the equalizer that came with the speakers.

Read the manual:

I am not that savy with home audio. I can get the stuff hooked up but I am not that in to it as some are on here. I would like to be able to just use the receiver and that is all. That is what I am wondering. What the connections would be, and how. I know this might have been discussed and I have searched but can't seem to find anything showing me how. Thanks for the patience and hopefully an answer. Thanks.

I hope that you saw I was just kiddin in my post. You shouldn't have a problem connecting them to your Pioneer Elite SC-55.

For the 901's to be setup properly you must have the EQ. If you are going to have the EQ you must have one of two things:

1. Seperates - so the EQ can go between the power amp and the preamp/prepro/or receiver used as a prepro

2. Or you must have a receiver with a Tape monitor loop - and the SC-55 doesn't have one.

So if you are just going to hook them up, no problem, if you are going to do it correctly - you've got a big problem.

P.S. I've also owned the 901's myself (for about 6 years - I sold mine last year, used them mainly in a PA setting but still followed the rules).

Yes I know you were kidding. Some people take stuff a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle too serious. So I kind of get the feeling that I will have to have a separate amplifier for these and that sucks. I wish I they wouldn't have made them so that I have to use that STUPID equalizer! I like the sound that they put out. I guess I will have to have a separate older amp. Who knows.

Get a two channel amp (Emotiva, outlaw, ect) and run the EQ between the amp and the receiver's (sc-55) front preout that should work.

Like others, I also owned a pair of 901's for many, many years. Yes you can easily connect them to your SC-55. Enjoy - you made a great decision on your receiver.

Why?

What makes these speakers "special" that they can't simply be connected to any AVR? Just curious.

Many people just connect the Bose 901 to a receiver and play...but if you do - you're not really listening to the 901. The 901 (like a few other speakers made in the 70's) are meant to be actively EQ'd, the eq curve of the 901 is very complex and can't be duplicated by a normal EQ. This EQ is part of the 901 system. Big Daddy left a link to the manual - I for one could never listen to the 901's as mains without the EQ...it's necessary!!!!!!

Progers you have a great system I'm surprised that you would recommend using the 901 without the EQ. You have to have a tape monitor loop, processor loop, or separates to properly use the 901's.

Hi prerich - I can only speak from personal experience. I owned 901's from 1995 until 2009. I used them as mains for about a year, and then I switched them to surrounds for the remainder of that time. I thought they sounded decent in that role.

To your point, sure there are better speakers and even the 901's would benefit from the EQ. But I was simply responding to the OP's request for information on whether or not the speakers can be connected to the SC-55. And to that question, the answer is yes.

I understand but to properly connect (as per the manual) you can't unless you have separates or the loop through on a receiver . I'm not trying to talk the OP out of his 901's, on the contrary - I want to give the 901's their fair shake and let the OP listen to them as the designer intended not trying to be argumentative - because I like the 901 and the 301 is my all time favorite Bose speaker ( I've owned 201, 301, 501, and 901's)

To the OP: here's a link to the manual http://www.frontrowelectronics.com/p...ges/og_901.pdf

On page 10 it will tell you that if you don't have a preout and a main-in, "the 901 will not be usable in your home theater system"

I have owned 2 pairs of 901s and you need the eq to run them or they will sound really really bad.

Since you are getting a better receiver, why not get better speakers too?

An EQ doesn't help much with Bose.
