Lovely stuff. This series is shaping up to be the best since 1993 and the DVDs/Blu Rays have always delivered on the special features. Really looking forward to this release.

I was going to buy this anyway as I'm a massive RD fan, but I was actually really impressed with the first 2 episodes of Series 11.

Series 10 was alright, but I never understood all the praise it got, it didn't feel like classic RD to me at all.

Couldn't make it to the end of episode 1, just wasn't that funny and it looked really cheap (something I could forgive if I was enjoying it)

Maybe episode 2 is better. I'll go bookmark it and watch it tomorrow.

See I was the opposite, I actually really liked how much better Ep 1 of S11 looked than the whole of Series 10, which just looked really cheap and horrible to me.

Episode 2 definitely felt like classic Dwarf though.

Yeah, I think this series has looked great so far; probably the best that Dwarf has ever looked. It would be foolish to think that Red Dwarf could look much better on a UK sitcom budget. They've done great stuff with the lighting this year which makes even some of the cheaper sets look good.

One thing I really like about X and XI is that they've returned to using miniatures.
I didn't much care for the phoney looking CGI in Back To Earth and previous seasons.
I think the model spaceships look really gorgeous in a retro kind of way.

The model work in X was almost a disaster, they had to redo the majority of it at the last minute.

Which made the extras all the more fascinating of course. Those who think it looks cheap should consider the budget these have, it's amazing it looks so damned good for the money they have. Is there a bit of rose-tinted specs going on as well? Red Dwarf has never exactly looked high budget.

I did feel the same for most of EP1 but there were a couple of bits near the end that made me laugh.

I miss Holly though: "Emergency. Emergency. There's an emergency going on."

EDIT: Just watched EP2 and really enjoyed it despite it ending rather abruptly.
[Show spoiler]I was worried they would have to start bahaving in the same 'moral' way as the previous crew

Maybe Norman won't be back after the public falling out (was it around the time of Back to Earth?) but I'd have Hattie back happily. A very different but no less enjoyable take.

Red Dwarf definitely always had a low budget feel about it of course, but for me there's something about Series X that just didn't look right at all, whatever it is they haven't made the same mistake with S11... so far!

A lot of the jokes in SX also felt really forced and not funny in a way that RD never was.

Prime example for me is the "Chinese Whispers Joke" that runs through one episode, just awful.

The less said about BTE the better, just watch Blade Runner instead.

Holly still not being back is the only thing I miss, as far as I know Norman has patched things up with Doug Naylor since the falling out and fans obviously want the character back so why they haven't included either Hatty or Norman is a mystery.

I like that episode. I love series X in general. I agree on Back to Earth. I enjoyed it as the only new Red Dwarf as it was back then, but a recent rewatch hasn't been kind to it. Might have worked better as the original 2-parter or 60 minute as intended. Similarly, when rewatching series 8 lately I lamented not being able to see the original one hour version of Back in the Red as the 3-parter is very flabby (even if it has a great additional flight controller that was a late rewrite for extra material! ).

I really enjoyed back to earth but not been a fan of X or XI. Hasn't been the same since Rob left.

Not even the moose joke? That was some of the funniest scenes since marooned.

I still think the VFX for Series X looked very good, especially when you consider the production difficulties you mentioned and the extremely low budget they had to work with.

There is an old school charm to the miniatures and it feels more appropriate for Red Dwarf to go for that retro-cool look.

Oh I agree Series X does looks good but that is only after the majority of the VFX was scrapped and re-done at the last minute.

Sadly it looks like they haven't done any audio commentaries again which is a shame as I always enjoyed listening to them on the past releases.
