Default Progressive Music Thread

I was going through some of my collection and realised that the biggest part of it is progressive music. Wonder if there are enough of us for a dedicated thread but figured why not.

What are some of your prefered artists, might be fun to share and maybe discover new ones.

I like most older bands such as Floyd, Genesis (Gabriel Era), Marillion, Gentle Giant, ELP, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Yes, etc.

What's out there that you would recommend ?

Try checking out The Mars Volta if you haven't heard them before. They're definitely up there in the current progressive/experimental rock genre. I would recommend starting with their album De-Loused In The Comatorium. It rocks

I would consider Tool progressive metal just like Dream Theater and that's were it's kept on my server, under prog/metal. I do have a nice collection with many sub genres but would like to not miss anything. Imagine, I just discovered Porcupine Tree about 18 months ago, don't know how that could of happened.

I would definitely consider Tool progressive metal.

pentatonic, it would surprise me if you didn't like the Mars Volta because I think they have a lot in common with Porcupine Tree. De-Loused in the Comatorium is an awesome album that I can tolerate in small doses (if that makes sense, like it's not the kind of album to which I want to listen every day). I also like the unplugged Octahedron album, which is a bit easier on the ears.

This song is the centerpiece of De-Loused; check out that transition that occurs at the 4-minute mark.

Also, do you listen to the band Caravan? I personally think they have the best sound in all of prog rock, sporting a balance of folk, prog, and hard rock melodies not unlike Genesis or Jethro Tull.

The Mars Volta - Cicatriz ESP (Complete) - YouTube

They definitely do sound like PT. I really liked that song and will get me some.

As for Caravan, I don't listen to them that much but they do show up regularly, For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Nightbeing my favorite. Nice to hear some good tips. I know I was out of the scene a bit but I mean Steven Wilson and I had no clue, I feel like a retard (If this term is not politicaly correct I apologise and will remove it)

French Prog ...Harmonium!

Pat and I have been huge fans for years. Any prog fan needs to have some of their albums in their library.

Nice thread buddy!

I would consider myself old school as well pentatonic, listening to the same bands you mentioned, (although I recently re-discovered Gentle Giant). The Youtube song by Spock's Beard posted by Psychonaut has grabbed my attention. I wasn't really aware there was still an active prog movement out there. I find myself looking backwards in my music. I'm not terribly excited by the new music of today. I guess I'm showing my age... or my stubborness.

Most of the bands cited here i really enjoy to hear them i only have one problem of what is prog rock or rock anyway for me it's mostly everything rock , heavy metal blues and jazz but don't listen to me i'm just a old fart .

BTW 2 small things

1: I would consider Queensryche as more one of the old glam rock on the same level as Cinderella , Poison , JBJ etc . but it is one of my 80's band .

2: and most importantly how can we forget RUSH

That's true, it's weird to think that Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull and Rush and Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater all fall underneath the "prog" umbrella because really each of these bands is quite different from each of these other bands... You could say that all five bands have a propensity for 10+ minute long songs, though.

pentatonic, I have these five Caravan albums, and all five are amazing IMO:
Caravan (1968)
If I Could Do It All Over Again (1970)
In the Land of the Grey and Pink (1971)
Waterloo Lily (1972)
For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night (1973)

The first two to which I started listening were 1971/1973, and I branched out from there, but I think they're all amazingly consistent listens.

Hmm, now that I think about it, maybe I ought to check out the Caravan & The New Symphonia (1974) album too, which I see was recorded live...

You sir, are insane. Listen to Queensryche's 'Rage For Order' and listen to Cinderella's 'Night Songs' and tell me if they are in the same arena.

It's a shame what Tate is doing to the band now though. Although I did like 'American Soldier', 'Dedicated to Chaos' was GOD AWFUL.

I own mostly their early stuff, and discovered them because of a video that ran many years ago. Don't know if you remember the time when artists would come together and record a song to aid something or other. Metal singers had their own (I really can't remenber enough to youtube it) and Geoff Tate impressed me quite a lot.

I wish I could find that video, anyone remember?

I would recommend Shadow Gallery too if you haven't listened to them.
From the bands of the 70s I do not see Triumvirat and Van der Graaf Generator / Peter Hammill.
