Question How "limited" is a Limited 3D Edition

So, I'm getting a 3D laptop soon and I was thinking of buying 3D titles as early as now.

However, I noticed a lot of titles are "Limited 3D Editions" like Hugo, Titanic, Avatar, etc. Question is, how limited are they? Are only a number of copies produced? Any chance they'll run out of print or sell completely out?

Good question.

I first noticed this trend of Limited Edition 3D start with Thor 3D, but looking at the pending release of Avatar 3D, which is also "Limited Edition 3D", it's all based on studios trying to inspire you to buy the 3D version now, before they decide to no longer print any if sales are too slow.

I think Avatar 3D can possibly increase the 3D market sales however, along with Avengers 3D. We'll see.

Some 3D titles, such as Last Airbender 3D, which is said to have weak 3D, is very hard to find nowadays, and it wasn't even listed as "Limited 3D".

Lesson, buy the ones you want now if it's says "limited edition" if it's at a reasonable price under 24 bucks. Otherwise, prices will skyrocket once it becomes scarce.

I wondered about the same. I rushed and bought plenty of 3D titles that had the Limited Edition tag on it. I've noticed that they are all Paramount titles that say it. (Thor, Captain America, TF: Dark of the Moon, Tintin.) Thing is, none of 'em seem to be OOP yet. If anything, as Zivouhr stated, some that doesn't say it is actually harder to find. I see Captain America, Thor, and TF probably more than any other 3D title in stores.

The Last Airbender 3D is hard to find because it was a Best Buy Exclusive that, as far as I know, was never released outside of that deal. You're not missing much, though. Not only is the 3D weak, it's sometimes just not there and almost always sloppy and full of errors.

My guess is that it's just marketing speak. Thor is the first one I know of too, and it sure isn't out of print.

"Limited Edition" may be a marketing ploy to try and sell the 3d version over the normal release...i'm sure that they are limited to some extent maybe 10,000 units to the 1,000,000 standard 2d releases (not accurate figures of course just as an example) due to the smaller 3d market.....

It's my opinion that these "Limited Editions" should at least contain some really special extra's...or bonus content that isnt available in the regular 2d release....or even something as simple as a 3D only Steelbook/digibook release!
not that i'm "captured" by extra features - its the movie I'm interested in. However for 3D to really take off it needs to have extra's on the disc and/or be released in advance of the regular 2d release....

Most cases tend to see the 2d release out before the 3D...which as a fair few here will admit to, once most people have the 2d version they wont "re-buy" for the 3D version...I know I wouldnt (well unless it was a REAL favourite movie)

I guess in reality it's "misleading advertising" and it should read "Hardly A Limited Edition"

I was wondering if the Titanic 3D BD really is limited. I am getting the Collectors Edition, but am thinking I need to pick up the standard 3D BD as well?

Thanks for that info on Airbender 3D. That explains why it top dollar on amazon and other sites. I also heard the martial arts were good, but the story and 3D not so much.

Good points. I agree that limited edition should also have some very special exclusive content, like John Carter 3D did with the Best Buy 3D version exclusive content. Or something like Target is doing with the limited edition exclusive Target 90 minute bonus footage extra of Avengers.

Exactly what I was going to say. If the set isn't numbered, studios can sell however many they want and still advertise the set as "Limited", because, technically, all printings of movies have a limited run.

Also, I learned not to trust seemingly credible YouTube videos talking about "Limited Edition". I remember Michael Bay mentioning 5000 copies were going to be signed for his limited edition Transformers box set, but given the fact that it's a) unnumbered b) sold by a variety of major stores like Best Buy and Amazon and c) still on the market as "new" after 9 months, I can't help but think that the studios conveniently changed their mind about how many they'd be making after they saw how many they could sell.
