Default What do you think about this sub?

Not feeling very motivated at work and I got an email for a driver on sale so I started working on a sub design. Gross volume is about 3.7 ft3.

F3 = 15.7 Hz
F10 = 13.2 Hz

Will handle 1800W before hitting xmax of the driver, but port noise will be too loud at that output. But you'll get 115dB output at 18Hz with 1800W! That should shake your foundation a bit.

What do you guys think?

That's huge! Are you raising a herd of cattle in there or what?

I like multiple smaller units, and this thing is the size of a small refrigerator.

That's right, I'm using this to herd the cattle! Haha.
Its not really that large and smaller than many of the commercial subs that can't dig this deep. I was thinking about dimensions 19.5 x 21.5 x 20...about 3.7cf gross.

If you like smaller subs, I have a couple of designs that are much more compact. One is 1cf gross digging down to below 23Hz F3. The other is 1.3cf gross reaching 15.2Hz F3. And this is without room loading and no EQing. I design my subs to run flat without the need to EQ up the low end. But these designs are limited to 200W. But the footprint is only about 9 x 14.

I'm a brute force kind of guy. I run sealed, with minimum 400W, but frankly, they don't go that deep - 15Hz rattles your teeth, no doubt. Getting that with 200W has it's advantages.

I guess the cabinet is not THAT big. It's an interesting concept.

I'm actually a fan of small subs also. I probably won't build the 3.7cf one.

So how's this one for you?...

1.35 ft3 (10 x 20 x 17)
F3 < 14.9Hz
F10 < 13Hz

Excursion limited to 250W, ~102dB down to ~16Hz.

I'm building a smaller one right now that goes to F3 of just under 20Hz, but I may change the design to this slightly larger version.

That sounds nice. I'm setting up a pair for my son, haven't settled on size yet (looking at 1.2 ft3) with a couple of Infinity 120.9 drivers. They're not rated below 23Hz, but I'm pretty sure they go deeper. Will run them sealed, these will be very slim deco units. I expect good things, but will be feeding them 400W (they're passive, it will be true power) so they're hungry. I'll see how it goes, but busting down to 15Hz in a 1.3 cu ft box sounds sweet.

The Infinity are nice drivers, especially the kappas. Post the T/S parameters and I'll model it.
