Default Your Disney Guilty Pleasures

We can have various agreements on some of Disney's best movies, but what about those movies you feel are really bad to awful, yet get an odd feeling of enjoyment out of them? In other words, what are your favorite Disney guilty pleasures?

Mine is The Country Bears...

So, recently HDnet Movies was showing Disney's The Country Bears. The last time I saw the movie was WAAAAAAAAY back in 2002 when it came out on DVD (and to think that this was the first movie in the "Disney theme park attraction" trilogy of movies that included Pirates and Haunted Mansion). I figured "Eh, why not". So I recorded it...

I will confess to everyone here, the movie is a HUGE guilty pleasure movie. I mean, objectively, it is a BAD movie. The bear suits look silly in the real world, it has little to no connection to the actual Country Bear shows, and at times the humor is just plain stupid.

... And yet, I love it. I have watched it more than ten times since I recorded it off of the TV. Personally, I can't get enough of the camp value. I love that these puppet bear suits look silly, I love how it gets metafictional at times, I love how it is a HUGE cartoon movie done in live action. Hell, some of the music is pretty catchy, too!

Judge me if you must...

Don't forget there were two other attraction-based movies: Mission to Mars and Tower of Terror. Tower of Terror, starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst was actually the first one. Mission to Mars was released under Disney's other label though (Touchstone).

Ah that's right, completely forgot about those! Still, I am referring to that period between 2002 and 2003 when Disney released movies based on classic Disneyland/Magic Kingdom attractions. I find it funny how it all eventually panned out...

Country Bears bombed horribly, and Haunted Mansion didn't do that fantastic either. Yet, Pirates was so successful that it inspired a whole new franchise, which in turn gave the attraction a kick in the teeth in terms of popularity.

I enjoyed 'The Emperor's New Groove'. It's not in the same league as 'Beauty and the Beast' and Disney's other 'big' movies, but it's a fun movie and I would love to see it on blu. Also, 'A Goofy Movie' is another guilty pleasure. My son and I used to watch it together when he was little. Slightly off subject is another guilty pleasure: Playing 'Goof Troop' on the SNES. My son and I still play that once and a while.

Love "Emperor's New Groove". I saw it at the cinema when it came out. Went to see it twice. Everyone was great. I love Eartha Kitt!

The other guilty pleasure would be "Swiss Family Robinson". My brother and I used to watch it together over and over when we were kids. I was so excited when it was finally released on DVD and for the first time got to see it in Widescreen. That was pretty awesome.

Emperor's New Groove is a good movie, so I wouldn't really call it a guilty pleasure.

As far as the "cheapquels" go, I always liked Aladdin and the King of Thieves because I grew up with the animated series.

I miss the Disney Channel Original Movies/Series from the late 90s. The Phantom of the Megaplex, Smart House, Genius (my favorite and one of the earliest roles for Shameless' Emmy Rossum), The Famous Jett Jackson (series and movie).

I suppose I would say Pete's Dragon out of their darker period in the 70s/80s.

And the sitcom guy ripped off the entire script for the Muppets movie.

("Our brand new Muppet character Beary, I mean, Walter"...Oh, stop. )

Aladdin, Hercules, Lilo & Stitch, Atlantis, Tarzan, Emperor's New Groove...Sometimes it takes a good Disney Afternoon TV-series adaptation to second-draft a good or confused Disney theatrical movie.

(Except when they spun off Lion King into a Timon & Pumbaa toon series--If you're part of the problem, you're not part of the solution. )
