Hi
Just wondering about Drive In? First is how come it was never popular over here and were there ever any in UK in the past? Also has anyone been to one? If so what was it like? What films do they show? Do they still have them in America? Does any other places have them like Australia and Canada? Cinemas are much better but I guess not as private. |

I live in Minnesota and I have one not too far away. I usually go once a summer. I'd go more but I wait until there are two movies showing together that I want to see. It's only $5.50 for two movies. I think it's really fun personally. I like sitting outside and watching movies. I was going to go last weekend as they had two movies I wouldn't mind seeing (White House Down and World War Z) but it was too cold out. This weekend is Smurfs 2 and Grown Ups 2 so I'll pass.

Never been, but I think there might be one or two still left, around my area. I would like to see a drive-in at least once. Some movies I think would benefit from the experience.
Imagine watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind, outside, at night, on the big screen. ![]() |

There's still one on the outskirts of Baltimore that I make it to once or twice a summer. It's called Bengies and has been in operation for 58 years. It shows three movies per evening, usually three of the big Hollywood films of the moment with a family-friendly opener. The guy who runs it is quite a character, and often screens campy retro trailers between features.

The one here just spent $100,000 to upgrade to digital. Grown Ups 2 and Wolverine are playing. $7 admission to see both movies.
This one used to be across the street from my grandparents. ![]() Last edited by HyperRealist; 07-30-2013 at 03:52 PM. |

There was a drive-in theater in my hometown, a small rural city, during my childhood, and they always showed B-movies, second-tier horror flicks, and such. Funeral Home, Phantasm, Swamp Thing, Battle Beyond the Stars, etc.
There's a drive-in here in Atlanta that features digital showings. They usually show current films, but they have a big three-day festival every year with older campy movies and such. There was a drive-in theater next to an expressway in Alabama that we would pass by all the time on the way to visit our grandparents during my childhood. I remember seeing a couple of nude scenes in movies as we passed by. I'm surprised that the location never caused any wrecks. |

I lived just a short drive between two here in Ohio. I've been to both, but it's been a few years. They both have two screens and play new film double features, so they run two movies at once. For example, Turbo starts at sundown and then after a brief intermission, Wolverine will start playing. At the same time, two different movies will play the same way on the other screen. The cost is $6/adult, $2/children under 11. Just park, tune the radio to the AM or FM station you need for the audio, and you're all set.

I live in the States. My dad was a cheapskate--my little sister usually had to hide in the back seat--so nearly every movie I saw the first 18 years of my life was at the drive-in. I hadn't been in years but when I was in Barbados this past January my g/f and I went to see Django. Horn honking is a form of communication there so it was a lot of fun. Even the rain made it a more memorable experience.
