Default Which movies(s) did you think would be bad, but turned out good?

Mine is Ransom, for years I walked by this movie on the shelves many times and I thought it wouldn't be very good, one day I rented it and it turned out to be an awesome movie.

Anyone else have a movie or movies that looked bad on the shelf but were really good?

Most recently I just watched Total Recall (2012) tonight and I thought it was good as Verhoeven's original. I am still not certain why it received such negative reviews. Yeah, it's far fetched , but so was the original and that's part of the appeal.

Based on the reviews by critics and fan reaction, I thought The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was going to be a Phantom Menace-level disaster. I ended up loving it just as much as the LotR trilogy.

Two other movies that come to mind are the two Bond films with Timothy Dalton, The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill. For years I had heard about them being lowpoints of the Bond franchise, so I avoided them at all costs. I finally gave in and watched them a few years ago and now they're on my top 5 best Bond films list.

Out Of Sight.

I let it pass in the theatre. And never rented it.
It wasnt until after Justified i became curious.

Not bad at all for a blind buy.

The Princess Bride. My step children kept going on about it and had me sit down and watch it with them. I was sucked in before I knew it.

Terminator Salvation for me, I regret not going to the theater because of bad reviews...would love to her the theater sound in that one.

It does have the best sword fight on film.

Warrior. I felt like the trailer gave away the movie so I had no interest in watching it. Decided to give it a shot and rent it one day and now its one of my favorite movies.

Iron Man. Judging from the trailer I saw, it looked like it would probably be another mediocre comic book movie. A buddy of mine dragged me to see it at the theater, and I'm glad he did. It's my favorite of the marvel films.

I had no intentions of seeing The Smurfs but my 9 year old niece wanted to see it so I took her and ended up kind of liking it actually.

one day I had a marathon of Harry Potter 1-3 and kind of got burnt out and found them too long and boring. I thought I'd give Deathly Hallows 1 and 2 a try and ended up loving those and now I appreciate all the previous Harry Potters too.

The Artist. I really don't care for black and white movies and silent movies and I thought I would be bored but it turns out I really enjoyed the Artist and so did my 9 year old niece.

The most recent example is 'Snow White and the Huntsman'. My better judgement told me to avoid that film like the plague but I really enjoyed it.

The other guys

I really hate will farrell and haven't really liked Marky Mark since boogie nights. But my girlfriend made me watch it and I adored it.

Made me also really dig will Farrell enough to watch his other stuff and really enjoy them too

Well, to be honest . . . I thought "Tangled" was going to be . . . meh for me but there were many who wanted to watch it so I went with everyone . . . and wow! The movie was great! Haven't seen a good Disney movie in a long while . . . but definitely one of my favorites.

Men in Black 3, everybody told me the ending saved it, but I liked it as a whole. I think it's the best out of the 3.

Waiting... Looked like garbage to me but a buddy drug me to it and I laughed the whole time. Definitely a movie for those in the service industry. Also really enjoyed Battleship. Got a free ticket so said screw it. With expectations that low you can't be disappointed but it turned out to be a hell of a fun time.

I'd have to say Sunshine.

My buddies and I like to have a few drinks and brows Netflix descriptions for what looks like corny B movies. We saw Sunshine's description and thought it sounded like a very cheesy movie. We were all pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a illegitimately good movie.

I can't say it turned out good (because lots of folks would disagree with that claim), but for me, I thought G.I. Joe would make for a good time at the movies just to be able to mock it for its stupidity, but I laughed at myself walking out the theater because I really liked it.

I'd also say the first Cars. I avoided it like the plague, but ended up really liking it when I saw it on BD. I also like The Change-Up. I just knew I would hate that one, but to my surprise...nope. Same goes for Chronicle and Crank (the first one). Lastly, Water Horse and The Expendables also come to mind.

As you can see, I have a few. Good question.
