Default Box office battle 7/19-7/21!!!

So, a really huge weekend for movies, who will take #1? Will the top three of this weekend continue to be a force? And will any of the new four films suffer? The Way Way Back opens to more theaters this weekend, but not wide until the week after.

EDIT: I feel it will be between Conjuring and Turbo, but DM2 will still be a force, so I give the edge to the only horror film! I think the crowd that gave The Purge a huge opening will repeat here. Maybe 33 million?

I don't see all the hype for Red 2. I want to see it but it just seems like one of those sequels no one really asked for.

I do agree it could be a bad weekend for Reynolds...but he gets to sit at home and have sex with Blake Lively, so is there ever really a BAD weekend for him?

I will be seeing Conjuring and R.I.P.D for sure one day. Might go back and see Red 2 and Monsters University the other day of the weekend.

I can;t slack too much, as I looked ahead and August is crazy packed too! The next best weekend to relax from theater going is opening September weekend when Riddick is the only film to open!

I think Turbo has a shot at #1 simply because summertime is movie time for kids, and they've already seen Despicable 2. I think RIPD does decent but not great numbers, as does Red 2. Conjuring is the question mark here. People eat up date night horror films (for one weekend anyway), regardless of actual quality, but will it be enough?

Really poorly managed release schedule for a bunch of these. At least two are going to take a beating. The Conjuring is insulated as it is a horror film and Turbo will get all of the audience who saw Despicable Me 2 and 3 weeks ago.

I hope Red 2 does well if it is good and I'm happy it exists but I don't see it being first. 3rd is probably likely.

I don't get why films like this aren't coming out in February or March.

Conjuring will sneak in and take it, that really feels like the only tent pole film of the weekend. R.I.P.D has mediocre written all over it, and I think audiences won't waste their time with it, at least Red 2 has a half way successful original behind it and bigger star power.

I saw a trailer last week on Lone Ranger for Red 2 and it said August something. It probably should have stayed there too.

Summit already had plans for RED 3 back in May. Then must know part 2 is a great film I guess.

Out of the four, I haven't seen any TV ads for Red 2, but the other three are on every commercial break.

The good thing about that is maybe it speaks to the quality of it and Summit feels confident? Here's hoping.

I watch so little live TV so I don't really have a grasp of it's marketing. I know it has been before all similar films over about the past month.

Sony did a good job, I think, of moving Elysium around and positioning it in August where it is should be buffed from fatigue and direct competition.

Turbo comes out on Wednesday so I guess that will technically win by default.

Red 2 has a massive amount of star power behind it. There's not just Bruce Willis, but also John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Brian Cox, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Mary-Louise Parker. The original was also a surprise success, especially on video, and the law of sequels will probably hold, that everyone who saw the first in any format will want to go and see the second (I do). One of the kids movies will probably win the day, but I could easily see Red 2 taking a sizable sum to second or third place.

And I imagine that many will be happy no matter what the ranking is, because I can see a close finish between the four new films, Grown Ups 2, Despicable Me and Pacific Rim, and I don't think there will be a runaway victory.

Speaking of Brian Cox summit sure as hell did everything they could to avoid showing even 1 frame of him in the trailers.

Even though Turbo looks average I'll go with the kiddie flick since they've won 4 straight weeks

Turbo opens on 7/17 though

I don't really consider any of those to be 'draws' for a wide audience.

I forgot about Turbo's Wednesday opening. Because of that, it will probably NOT win the weekend, as all the people who see it on its opening day (and day #2) won't count toward weekend box office, and that's that many less tickets they'll sell over the weekend.

Yeah, I think so. I have heard good things. Someone said it was one of the better Willis acting roles in some time. I love Bruce, but he does seem to be sleepwalking through some of these sequels he's done in the last year.

I have heard he and Zeta Jones are great together!

The early release of Turbo may hurt it though. Wed and Thur won't count for the weekend and with it being summer, kiddies might go see it early. I never thought of that.

I just figured he wasn't coming back!!! GREAT news to hear he's returning. Cox makes movies better! ...Wait...

I have yet to see footage of Kevin Bacon in R.I.P.D. either!

We know Ryan Reynolds has a movie against himself, but does not Mary-Louise Parker too? That is kind of crazy!

Two actors, three movies, and they may still both not hit the #1 spot!

My thinking as well. I also wonder if an Animated film can win for a FIFTH straight week in a row.

Never underestimate parents looking for something to keep the kids busy during summer vacation
