Default Purchase Patterns

Do you have any noticable purchase patterns?

I haven't upgraded Road to Perdition yet but I plan on buying it once Skyfall comes out. (Mendes & Craig) Which will prompt me to grab Catch Me If You Can. (Hanks).

Another staple that I haven't upgraded yet was Pulp Fiction. I've told myself I'll wait until Django Unchained is released. I'll probably pickup Collateral then too.

I do this association game with most of my purchases.

I'm trying to cover every year from the past 100 years so I can have a "100 Years of Film on Blu-ray" collection. I keep a chronological spreadsheet of all my titles, so I basically have a 100 year chart showing how many movies I have from each year. I try to get movies from the years (or decades) that I have the fewest films from. Naturally, a year with zero titles gets priority, but I still end up buying films from 2008 (my most abundant year, 13 titles) because some years just have a crap-ton of great movies. I'm only missing a few years, and mostly just because there are no blu-ray releases from those years yet.

(Missing 1944, will soon fill that with Preminger's 'Laura', missing 1938, will soon fill that with Curtiz's 'Robin Hood', will fill 1934 with 'Man Who Knew Too Much', missing 1929 and don't know of a single blu-ray release that would cover that year, though I think 'Spite Marriage' might be getting a separate release sometime soon, not sure what to use to cover 1922, and may have to resort to DVD to cover 1914 with 'Cabiria', 1916 with 'Intolerance', 1919 with 'The Spiders', no ideas for covering 1917 or 1918, but DVD's don't count and I would double-dip those to properly complete the collection. Figure I will get a bluray from 2013 before I can find one from 1913, so the collection would span the century from 1914-2013).

I have a data-driven purchasing pattern, with the intent of making my collection as proportional as possible, as I piled up a ton of titles from the 21st century before I got the idea, so I have about 80 films from the last decade, but only about 20 each from the 30's and 40's, and less from the 1920's, although I only fell behind on the 20's because I got the Hitchcock and Universal Monsters sets and got a big jump on the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Catching up on the 20's will be easy, there's lots of interesting titles available from that decade. I also strive for variety, try to get films from as many different countries, directors, and genres as possible, going for a "balanced" collection, something to keep for a long time.

The only time I have any sort of trend is during the Holiday times. I'll buy themed films more often during that period.

I generally wait until something is on sale for the right price before I pick it up. The only "pattern" I might have is if I'm missing a different movie or season in a particular series I might hold off on picking it up, with the thought being that it might be on a better sale then.

I don't have patterns per say but personal rules I have created for myself in the last 5 years after making the change to Blu-ray from year of experience with VHS, Laserdisc and DVD

1. I no longer purchase on release day. In most cases I wait a month. Reason is not just price issue but more impulse buying that end up collecting dust

2. I no longer go and purchase a movie just because I enjoyed it right at that moment. I use to do this a lot in the old days and ended up with tons of movies that I really never watch and just collected dust. Now I wait more then 6 months and longer and ask myself do I really want it and in 90% of the cases the answer is no I don't want it, it was just impulse

3. I don't buy Blu-ray only, Criterion still releases many movie packages in DVD format and the chances of many of these ever make it to Blu-ray are slim. If I enjoy a movie, if it's only on DVD I will not skip it.

4. Never more then two purchase per week and that is it.

Pretty much where I am right now. I think I bought a lot more in patterns like the OP mentioned when I was really getting into CDs in the late 90s/early to mid 2000s. I'd buy an album, like it, then look for the other albums by the band, then albums that band members sang/played on, that sort of thing.

Purchases usually come in waves for me. I rarely buy new films on release day / week (maybe a handful of times per year). Usually wait for a sale or coupon or buy used as Moviestop / Pawnshops.

I often do this too, mainly when I discover a new actor I like. IMDB and Amazon recommendations always get me too

I use the price tracker on this site religiously. When a title I want hits my price point I usually grab it. Tuesdays are also big days for me.

My usual system is to buy in pairs which makes it very difficult on weeks when multiple films get released that I would like to own. I've learned to be very patient when deciding on when I do buy and how much I am willing to pay. Blind buys are a rarity for me unless I like the actor(s) and or director. I am also a completest so even if a sequel sucks, I'll eventually pick it up dirt cheap just to have the set.

I typically buy films when I see them at a store for a reasonable price, or when the Blu-Ray.com price matcher indicates Amazon has a reasonable price.

I typically buy only classic or well known movies nowadays. Before, I'd buy one or two every now and then that I really like. It used to be that I'd buy tv season sets, but I slowed down on that a lot.

Black Friday and U&S sales shake that up and make me a bit of an impulse buyer. I buy more, but I still limit my purchases to classics that I know I'll like, or heard good things about, and upgrades for my dvds. Of course, only if the price is right.

I buy movies I know I'll repeat watching, and I'll sell them on Amazon if I felt I've seen the movie enough times that I don't need to see it ever again.
